Job Description

The Maintenance Safety Officer reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the operation, service and inspection of all Fire Safety and Life Safety equipment of the hospital, including remote site.
    • In collaboration with the Electrical supervisor, inspects and assures proper operation of the Fire Alarm System.
    • In collaboration with the Power Plant supervisor, inspects and assures proper operation of fire pumps and fire sprinkler and suppression systems.
    • Inspects other fire safety related equipment including, fire extinguishers, fire hoses, fire valves, and external connections at frequencies consistent with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
    • Coordinates fire sprinkler shutdowns.
  • Responsible for providing Fire and Life Safety employee training and education.
    • Conduct Fire Drills as required by the NFPA and JCAHO standards.   Participates in internal and external disaster drills.
    • Participates in the Safety Steering Committee's safety education program.
    • Conducts departmental fire safety training as requested.
    • Trains fire response team members in fire safety and fire prevention techniques.
  • Responsible for regulatory and compliance related to employee safety and fire safety, participating in insurance, fire protection district, and regulatory inspections as necessary.
    • Remains current on all required Joint Commissions, Environment of Care standards, and NFPA codes, paying particular attention to NFPA 1, NFPA 72, NFPA 99 & NFPA 101.   
    • Maintains hospital compliance with OSHA Hazard Communications Standard and The Toxic Substance Disclosure Act.  Maintains, and annually submits to the IDOL, a list of necessary MSDS sheets.  Produces specific MSDS sheets for Employees, on request, as required by regulation
    • Conducts weekly Hazard Surveillance Inspections and documents results in accordance with Joint Commission requirements.  Environment of Care Administrator.
    • Provides fire safety building tours to various agencies as requested, including, but not limited to; local fire protection district, insurance carrier, Joint Commission, etc.
    • Administers “Hot Work Permit” program.
    • Administers “Fire Partition Penetration Permit” program.
    • Participates in Special Project Meetings.
  • Responsible for performing other duties and related duties and special projects as requested.
    • Performs Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM) analysis and inspections. 
    • Participates on committees as requested by the Vice President. 
    • Participates and reports to the Safety Steering Committee annually.
    • Responsible for providing response to emergency situations on-call for fires or fire system problems. 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Three to five years experience in hospital fire/safety or related areas.  Familiarity with local building and fire codes, OSHA, NFPA and JCAHO standards as related to the hospital environment.  Must be self-motivated and be able to exercise independent judgment.
  • Must communicate effectively with people at all levels.  A positive, helpful and courteous attitude must be maintained at all times.
