About Nearmap
Property intelligence is reshaping how the world understands the built environment, and Nearmap is driving that. We put powerful aerial imagery, AI-driven analytics, and geospatial tools into the hands of the people who plan, build, insure, and govern the places we all live and work. Our technology turns property uncertainty into decisive action, and our culture brings out the best in the people who build it.
We move fast, we care about craft, and we're proud of what we're building. If you're energized by turning hard problems into real-world impact, we'd love to meet you.
Job Description
Use of AI data in insurance pricing entails regulatory review by state departments of insurance. When a carrier intends to use Nearmap data in its rates, both the carrier’s own actuaries and state insurance regulators can come back with various questions and/or objections. Many are predictable and specific: how was ground truth for an attribute determined, what do the goodness-of-fit metrics look like on held-out data? Others have never been asked before and have yet to be fully answered.
You will be the actuarial voice inside Nearmap’s and our customers’ rate filings. Working with our AI and Computer Vision team, you will build a library of validation materials behind every Nearmap attribute and score used in rating, produce exhibits and memos for state DOI review, and answer regulator objections with analysis that holds up under scrutiny.
This is a customer-facing actuarial role, not a back-office one. You will report into Insurance Product and work alongside our regulatory affairs owner, who owns regulator relationships and submission mechanics, so your time goes to the analysis and the defense of it.
Key Responsibilities
You’ll own and defend the filing evidence:
Coordinate on and collaborate with cross functional teams to produce the filing materials for each Nearmap attribute and score used in rating: model memos, validation and accuracy metrics, and the actuarial exhibits that go into a submission.
Document and maintain what each state requires for model validation, including details on state-by-state confidentiality and trade secret treatments, ensuring Nearmap consistently produces exhibits that satisfies the NAIC checklist for model filings
Turn model outputs into the evidence that filings need, such as model validation metrics, coverage rates, distributional analysis, bias and fairness testing, and by-state breakdowns. Lead the analytical response to regulator objections, working with our regulatory affairs owner on strategy, framing, and submission, and join calls with departments of insurance to explain methodology and results directly.
Manage administration of Nearmap’s filings including creating and maintaining SERFF accounts and keeping good records of all Nearmap filing materials and exchanges.
You'll work directly with customers:
Advise on which attributes are filing-ready and which carry approval risk and build supporting materials to enable the GTM teams and customers ahead of time.
Partner with carrier actuarial and pricing teams on how Nearmap data is best implemented in their rating plans.
Collaborate with pre-sales to support data tests and lift analyses that demonstrate predictive value and help turn the results into something a filing can use.
You'll make the next filing cheaper than the last:
Build reusable validation templates and exhibits so each new carrier program costs less effort than the one before it.
Establish product requirements for new products and scores before they ship that makes them “filing ready” immediately upon release.
Qualifications
5+ years of property and casualty actuarial experience, with real exposure to pricing, ratemaking, or rate filings.
ACAS or FCAS credentialing strongly preferred for this role. Candidates with substantial ratemaking and filing experience will be considered.
Experience preparing actuarial exhibits for rate filings and responding to regulator objections.
Bachelor's degree in actuarial science, statistics, mathematics, economics, or a related field.
Skills
You can explain carrier-led rate filing processes to someone who is not an actuary without making them feel lost.
You are comfortable with predictive model output, including GLMs, gradient boosting, and the validation statistics that go with them.
You have worked with large claims and exposure data using standard tooling including SQL, R, or Python.
You write technical documentation a regulator will accept and in a way that minimizes rounds of objections.
You are client-facing and steady on a call with a carrier's actuarial leadership.
What makes you stand out
Experience at an actuarial consultancy or directly at a carrier supporting carrier rate filings across multiple states and carriers.
Experience with catastrophe or property peril models, or with imagery-derived and AI-derived rating variables.
Prior regulator-side ratemaking review experience.
Familiarity with SERFF and the practical mechanics of how filings move.
You’ll be successful if you are:
Intellectually honest about what the data supports, and willing to say when a result is directional rather than conclusive.
Energized by explaining hard things simply. Most of the value here comes from that.
Analytical and personable, equally at home with a model and with a customer.
Motivated to be the actuarial expert customers rely on, not just an internal analyst.
