Job Description
The Ombudsperson performs the following duties and responsibilities:
1) provides impartial and confidential conflict resolution services to NU community members who are aggrieved or concerned about an issue;
2) provides professional support for individuals and groups engaged in addressing workplace conflict, issues, or concerns informally;
3) listens to clients, assesses situations, and guides individuals toward effective problem resolutions and options;
4) if necessary, and while maintaining confidentiality, engages in informal information gathering to better understand an issue from all perspectives;
5) whenever appropriate, provides inquirer with referrals to other resources, such as the Office of Conflict of Interest, Integrity, and Compliance, Office of Conflict Resolution, Human Resources, University Counseling Services, Health and Wellbeing Center, Campus Safety, and the like;
6) identifies problems or trends that affect the entire University or significant parts of it; provides early warning of new areas of organizational concern, upward feedback, critical analysis of systemic needs for improvement, and make systems change recommendations;
7) together with the Office of the Conflict Resolution designs and conducts training programs for the NU community in dispute/conflict resolution and collaborative problem solving, negotiation skills and theory, respectful communication, and related topics;
8) timely and properly executes the tasks of the line manager and the University`s management;
9) observes the requirements of the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Employer`s internal documents;
10) is responsible for exercising the labor and performance discipline;
11) is responsible for ensuring the integrity of official documents, and prevention of the disclosure or leakage of confidential and business information, as well as information of restricted access per the legislation, Charter and internal documents of the Employer;
12) in case of dismissal, is responsible for the timely transfer of all paper documentation, digital information, inventory to another employee as instructed by the line manager (to be certified by the act of acceptance-transfer).
Qualifications
Education: Advanced degree, preferably from institutions with English as a language of instruction.
Work experience: Minimum 20 years of related work experience. Relevant dispute resolution training or ombudsperson experience is preferred. Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures is also desirable.
Knowledge: Strong knowledge of NU Values, Culture, and Code of Ethics. Knowledge of the Standards of Practice of the International Ombudsperson Association, methods of alternative dispute resolution.

An ombudsperson should have a reputation for integrity, for dealing fairly, effectively, and in a timely fashion with all constituents;
The ombudsperson must be sensitive to dealing with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures; be open, objective, and must seek to understand issues from multiple perspectives.
