Job Description

We are currently seeking enthusiastic and committed casual teachers to join our Academic Team. In this role, you will deliver high-quality teaching that supports students in developing the academic skills and confidence needed for tertiary study, while contributing to the inclusive and supportive learning environment that UCC is known for. Multiple positions are available.

Experience teaching in high school, TAFE, RTOs, tertiary education, or other pathway program settings is highly desirable. A strong understanding of high school, tertiary, and/or adult learning theories and principles is essential to effectively engage and support learners across the following courses:

  • Diploma courses - Tertiary Level
    • Academic English unit (a degree in teaching English is essential)
  • Enabling Courses - Pre-Tertiary Level
    • UC Prep
    • UC Connect - Academic Techniques unit and Humanities unit
  • International Foundation Studies Course (IFS) - Year 12 Equivalent
    • English units, Maths units, Computing (Technologies) units and Humanities units.

This is an onsite role based in Canberra, ACT, Australia. Given the casual nature of this position, the working hours and patterns may vary weekly. Applicants must have full working rights in Australia, as this role does not offer sponsorship for visas.

Primary responsibilities:

  1. Under the instruction of the Unit Convenor and/or Program Co-ordinator, prepare and deliver face-to-face and/or teaching and learning activities.
  2. Consultation with students if needed.
  3. Keep accurate and timely record of students' attendance in the UCC system.
  4. Follow up and report non-attenders and students at risk of failing the course.
  5. Marking assessments when required, entering grades on the relevant systems, and providing constructive and detailed feedback to students
  6. Monitor Learning management system (i.e. Canvas) (LMS) activities
  7. Record keeping maintaining grade book in LMS
  8. Maintain accurate attendance in LMS for student monitoring purposes
  9. Supervision of assessment activities
  10. Attend moderation meetings when required
  11. Attendance at College staff meetings as required
  12. General administration associated with the activity undertaken
  13. Other tasks relating to the role as required.

Qualifications

Essential selection criteria: 

  1. Minimum qualifications:
  • For the Academic English unit in diploma courses: A minimum of a bachelor's degree is required, with teaching experience in tertiary education, adult learning, and/or high school or college education settings.
  • For the Enabling courses: A minimum of a diploma qualification is required,  with teaching experience in adult learning and/or high school or college education settings.
  • For the IFS course: A minimum of a diploma qualification is required, with extensive teaching experience in tertiary education and/or high school or college education settings. To teach English units within this course, a relevant qualification in Teaching English as a Second Language is essential.
  1. Demonstrated high-level communication skills and the ability to work with a small team of teachers collaboratively.
  2. Demonstrated understanding of student equity and access, including the ability to identify and address barriers to ensure equitable opportunities for all students.
  3. Experience in working with students of diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and inclusiveness.
  4. Experience working with students with neurodivergent backgrounds.
  5. Demonstrated skills in electronic information management.
  6. Must hold a Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration.
  7. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to principles of equity and health and safety in the workplace.

Desirable selection criteria: 

  1. Understanding of the TEQSA framework and ESOS ACT.
  2. Developed strategies for engaging students in pathway programs
  3. Experience in teaching mixed academic skill level students
  4. Track record in professional development
