Job Description

Senior Frontend Developer (React)

Nationwide | Hybrid, 50% office attendance where you live within reasonable commuting distance of an NEC SWS office | Permanent | SC eligibility is essential.

Join us and help shape the future of frontend delivery across large national public service systems. We are looking for a Senior Frontend Developer who can bring strong technical expertise, help drive the team forward, and play a key role in turning complex delivery goals into successful outcomes.

In this role, you will shape frontend architecture, lead the design of reusable components, and help set coding and engineering standards. You will mentor other engineers, review code, and work closely with stakeholders to turn complex requirements into robust, maintainable solutions. You will also tackle important challenges in usability, accessibility, security, performance, and maintainability in secure, operationally sensitive environments.

The role offers the opportunity to contribute across major national programmes, spanning justice and probation, national licensing, and beyond. It is well suited to an engineer who wants real technical influence, enjoys helping teams succeed, and wants to play a meaningful part in developing the next generation of large-scale public-sector services.

What you will do

  • Build and deliver frontend features end-to-end using React, Next.js and TypeScript.

  • Shape frontend architecture, standards and implementation patterns.

  • Design and evolve reusable components and shared UI approaches

  • Improve performance, maintainability and delivery confidence across the frontend.

  • Help ensure accessibility is built in from the start, with WCAG 2.2 AA in mind.

  • Guide testing approaches across unit, integration and end-to-end levels.

  • Work closely with product, design, QA and back-end engineers to shape solutions early.

  • Mentor engineers through peer review, technical guidance and day-to-day collaboration

  • Contribute to Frontend practices and reusable approaches that can support other national systems over time.

Qualifications

What we are looking for

  • Strong professional experience building modern front ends in production.

  • Deep hands-on experience with React.

  • Strong experience with Next.js.

  • Strong TypeScript skills and experience in building scalable, maintainable codebases.

  • Good understanding of Frontend architecture, state management, performance optimisation and modern engineering practices.

  • Experience improving quality through testing, code review and practical engineering standards.

  • Strong accessibility awareness and experience building inclusive digital services.

  • Ability to make sound technical decisions and balance short-term delivery with long-term maintainability.

  • Experience collaborating effectively with product, design, QA and back-end engineering.

  • A senior mindset, someone who can lead through judgement, ownership and hands-on delivery.

Desirable experience

  • GOV.UK Design System and Government Service Standard.

  • Storybook or similar UI documentation tooling.

  • Frontend security fundamentals, including XSS and CSRF awareness.

  • Cloud-based delivery on AWS or Azure.

  • Experience working in secure, regulated, or operationally sensitive environments.

Why this role

This is a chance to work on a service with clear national importance and real operational impact. You will shape the frontend direction for a major public-sector transformation, build a future-ready platform that improves productivity, strengthens security, and supports better decision-making across complex casework, rather than just implementing tickets.
