Job Description
NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48 are seeking a highly skilled General Assignment and Special Projects Photographer to join our award‑winning newsrooms. This role is ideal for a visual journalist who thrives in fast‑paced environments, excels in collaborative storytelling, and brings a strong creative and visual mindset to every assignment. As a General Assignment Photographer, you will be responsible for capturing daily news across a wide range of topics and environments, often under tight deadlines. You will also work closely with our Investigative and Special Projects teams to produce compelling, high‑impact journalism that serves and informs our communities.
Job Responsibilities
- Cover local news and participate in general newsgathering
- Operate: camera, sound, lighting, editing equipment, LiveU/Dejero live packs, and live trucks to cover live and taped events
- Respond quickly to breaking news and coordinate effectively with the assignment desk, reporters, anchors, production, control room, and NBC/Telemundo personnel
- Capture high‑quality video, natural sound, and visual elements for newscasts, Investigative and special projects
- Operate station issued equipment to the fullest and within all required safety guidelines
- Proficient in lighting, videography and cinematography, non-linear editing with Edius and Adobe CC Suite, microwave truck operations, content delivery, recording virtual interviews, Live U and Dejero
- Understand and practice all NBC safety standards and ethics
- Maintain equipment and vehicles by doing preventive maintenance and inspections
- Collobrate with others to produce daily stories
- Demonstrate strong storytelling foundation i.e. NPPA-style story-builds
- At direction of the assignment desk respond to breaking news obeying all traffic laws
- Use courtesy and respect at all times and take extra caution when in the public’s eye
- Attend editorial meetings to gain better understanding of overall process
- Take annual safety training
- Work competitively under tight deadlines while upholding the highest journalistic standards
- Held to the highest journalistic standards
- Apply strong graphic‑building and animation skills when needed
- A highly creative shooter and editor with a strong visual sensibility, known for elevating daily news and long‑form storytelling through thoughtful composition, lighting, creative use of graphics and editing, and for maintaining NPPA‑aligned ethical and visual standards.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in News Camera/Field Photography
- 3-5 years of experience in a top ten market
- Must adhere to Environmental Health & Safety standards and regulations
- Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds of equipment at a given time
- Cable Reeler (23 pounds)
- Omni Kit (33 pounds)
- Shoulder mount camera (20-25 pounds)
- TVU, LiveU, Dejero (portable units) – ranging from 11-18 pounds
- Must be able to stand for at least 2 hours at a time (in breaking news situations, may need to stand for longer periods of time – up to 8 hours)
- Must be able to walk up-hill, down-hill and different types of terrain
- Must be able to operate a live truck
- CBNG live pack experience
- Must be able to maneuver small spaces (in/out of vehicles and to be able to take camera shots in tight spaces)
- Must be able to sit for up to 2 hours at a time (i.e. for editing purposes)
- Must be fully knowledgeable in all aspects of ENG field operations
- Must be proficient working with Edius edit v.9, and newer, systems
- Must be Proficient in the Sony workflow
- Must be able to operate a microwave truck
- Must have strong understanding of computer/IT workflows
- Must understand File Transfer Protocols
- Job requires the ability to perform well outside in all types of weather and with a high degree of self-sufficiency
- This position requires a high degree of flexibility. Candidates must be willing to work nights, weekends, and other non‑traditional hours as news demands. You must also be able to travel throughout our TV market and occasionally beyond it to cover breaking news, enterprise stories, and special projects.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States
- Must be 18 years or older
- Must have a valid Driver’s License as well as a clean driving record

Desired Characteristics
- Fluency in Spanish and English, with exceptional written and verbal communication skills in both languages
- Degree in Broadcast Journalism/Production
- Must be self-motivated, collaborative and possess a high level of creativity to tell stories with sound and images; strong NPPA-style preferred
- Proficiency in Adobe CC Suite a plus
- In depth knowledge of DSLR and Cinema Cameras SONY FX6 & SONY FX3
- Excellent photographer in Newsgathering, News production, station promotions and other general station projects as assigned
- Work independently and capture informative and reliable newsgathering video and audio for broadcast
- Possess strong news judgment
- Work with others efficiently under daily deadline pressure
- Solve technical issues in the field
- Satellite truck operation

Required On-Site: This position is required to be performed full-time from an NBCUniversal-designated worksite.

Salary range: $80,000 - $100,000
