The Tool & Die Maker is responsible for setting up and operating a variety of computer-controlled and mechanically controlled machine tools to produce precision metal parts, instruments, and tools.
Job Description
1. Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, band saws, surface grinders, visual grinders, radial drill presses, bench grinders and various hand power tools used in machining, assembling and repairing metal parts, progressive dies, injection molds, tools and equipment. Receives instructions from Supervisor on work assignments.
2. Selects proper tool steel for any given tool and machine. Heat treat and grind to finished blueprint or old part
specification.
3. Grinds and fits carbide die components and work with very critical tolerances.
4. Checks progressive dies and injection molds to determine repairs needed to assure product being made will meet
required specifications.
5. Interprets blueprints, layouts, sketches and other complicated drawings as required. Uses knowledge and experience
to take working stock and build dies or molds to produce various parts.
6. Inspects and measures all finished material for required specification.
7. Keeps work area clean, safe and orderly work areas at all times.
8. Performs other related miscellaneous duties as required.
Qualifications
· Must be able to follow instructions.
· Able to operate Drill Press, Mill, Grinder, and Lathe with set-up assistance.
· Able to read calipers, micrometers, and indicators.
· Willingness to train new Tool and Die Makers.
· Able to read and understand shop prints.
· Able to complete tasks with minimal assistance.
· Able to make jigs and fixtures.
· Must be able to understand uses and best application for each tool steel.
· Able to complete heat treat process.
· Grind tooling to tight tolerances.
· Understand and use shop math.
· Sharpen and maintain tooling for dies.
· Able to construct tooling for dies.
· Complete set-up of Mill, Lathe, and Grinder independently.
