Job Description
The Lead Ramp Agent will direct the daily activities of the team, balance resources, and is responsible for supporting a team's ability to achieve mutually established goals. This role is responsible for providing support in turning an aircraft on-time, with a focus on safety and service. The Lead performs all Agent duties while mentoring and setting an example for team members.
Key Responsibilities:
- Promote and maintain a culture of safety at all times.
- Marshall aircraft into gate or designated parking spot.
- Pushback and/or tow aircraft to and from gate or designated parking spot.
- Meet and exceed operational targets while maintaining service, timeline, safety, and compliance requirements.
- Assume responsibility and accountability for the team and of team members while leading, directing, motivating, and approving the team's work.
- Perform station leadership duties such as assigning flights for the day, scheduling and managing agents on a week-to-week basis.
- Recognize and celebrate individual and team performance.
- Monitor team activities, ensuring that each team member follows proper operational and safety procedures and customer service standards, and verbally coach and recognize agents to reinforce and improve behaviors.
- Investigate operational, safety, and performance irregularities with focus on future prevention; Communicate findings and recommend improvements.
- Ensure safe equipment operation, excellent housekeeping, cleanliness, and organization in all work and operational areas.
- Provide a comprehensive briefing and handoff to the next shift to ensure a seamless operation and overall benefit to the team and station.
- Mentor station agents, both newly trained and experienced, in all station agent job functions.
- Maintain curiosity, seek better ways to do things for ongoing improvement.
- Other duties may include clerical functions, reports, and assisting with unexpected passenger needs or complaints.
- Must set an example for the team and embody the McGee values of Safety, Service, Integrity, Mutual Respect, Accountability, and Pride at all times and portray a positive image in this customer-facing role.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support McGee’s successful business operation.
Qualifications
Required
- 6 months of direct work experience in the specific duty (ramp, cabin cleaning, etc).
- Demonstrated skills in proactive and honest communication, providing direction and allowing team members to execute tasks, setting clear expectations and holding others accountable.
- Self-motivated, with proven ability to lead and direct the work of others in a positive way.
- Ability to provide specific and constructive feedback as well as positive recognition.
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong active listening skills.
- Must be able to work well in a team environment and understand team objectives.
- Strong problem solving and teamwork skills.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical functions (e.g., counting bags, verifying cargo weights).
- Flexibility to work varied shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds on a frequent basis.
- Ability to understand and interpret flight schedules and airline flight destination information.
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken).
- Ability to obtain & maintain an airport SIDA badge, US Customs seal, and USPS security clearance.
- Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
- Previous experience operating airport ground service equipment.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Internal Team Member Qualifications:
Required
- Current team members must have an established record of attendance reliability and strong job performance; No active discipline above written warning on file during the previous 6 months.
- Completion of lead training.
Preferred
- Successful completion of probationary period.
Additional Information
Physical Demands & Work Conditions
Lifting/Carrying: Ability to frequently lift, push, pull, and carry baggage and cargo weighing up to 50 pounds regularly, and occasionally up to 75 pounds or more. This often involves lifting items onto raised surfaces or into confined aircraft bins.
Movement:
Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, squatting, crawling, and twisting for extended periods (up to 8-hour shifts or more).
Ability to climb stairs/ladders and work in cramped or high places.
Manual dexterity required for handling documents and operating equipment.
Driving/Operating Equipment: Must be able to operate various ground support equipment (GSE) such as tugs, belt loaders, and baggage carts, which requires a valid driver's license and the physical capability to do so safely.
Vision/Hearing: Clear vision (including depth perception and peripheral vision) and hearing are required for monitoring flight information, communication via radio/headsets, and safety compliance in a noisy environment.
Outdoor Exposure: The job is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow.
Noise and Environment: The work environment is very noisy, near active aircraft engines and ground support machinery, and may involve exposure to fumes, dust, and other airborne particles. Hearing protection is usually provided and required.
Physical Capabilities Testing
This position requires significant physical agility; you may be required to complete a Physical Capabilities Test post offer that will demonstrate your ability to:
- Lift, carry, and place weighted standardized boxes, suitcases, or duffel bags from floor height to overhead.
- Climb steps carrying weighted standardized box, suitcase, or duffel bags.
- Sit and rotate to the left, right, and behind and visually identify a letter or number.
- Pull a weighted sled a standardized distance.
Union Information
This position is part of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Per the CBA, work schedules are awarded based on seniority. New hires are awarded their initial shift based on operational need. Therefore, the company cannot guarantee certain days off.
