The Role

The Linux Foundation is seeking an eager, earned media minded individual whose primary focus and passion is pitching and placing great industry, thought leadership and profile stories. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the execution of media relations and thought leadership campaigns in the open source software and technology sector. The Media Relations Manager will execute and grow a proactive, strategic, brand-enhancing media relations program on behalf of the Linux Foundation and its senior leadership. This person will serve as the key point of contact with outside media seeking to interview executives and program managers. 

Candidates must have four to six years experience and a growing track record of success in earned media relations, as well as an innate ability to develop compelling narratives and written materials. The ideal candidate is a writer and avid consumer of the news who can help craft story ideas to inspire coverage on all platforms. This is about placing meaningful articles that build on an ongoing narrative that will directly impact the growth of the organization and build on its reputation. The goal will be to raise awareness for the Linux Foundation; with a focus on its key projects, content and thought leadership.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate enthusiasm and energy, an appetite to learn and be challenged, and a foundation of experience in writing, organizational skills, team collaboration and media relations. • You know how to keep your pulse on the news cycle and trends to ensure we are inserting our narratives in targeted and insightful ways.

• You are a media junkie who can quickly identify media themes, flag trends and respond by crafting a targeted pitch and/or assets for storytelling 

• You know how to conduct media monitoring and analysis and to construct media lists that will help find the right reporter for the story at the right time

• You think of the media as an audience and a channel

• Articulate, poised, personable and quick on your feet

• Ability to manage multiple projects with quality and efficiency

• Superior writing skills

• Ability to work with a team to achieve results

• Strong proficiency with media databases and measurement tools

• Experience coordinating crisis communications

• Familiarity with reporters, websites, blogs, and social media feeds that cover the open source software industry

Minimum Qualifications

• Four to five years of PR Agency experience in executing media and thought leadership campaigns

• Proficient in earned media outreach; experience in open source software preferred

• Fluent in the fundamentals of public relations and an understanding of how the media work

• Understand the evolving media landscape, new opportunities and platforms

• Work well across various teams in a humble and helpful manner
