Company Description
Legal & General (L&G) is a leading UK financial services group and major global investor.
We’ve been safeguarding people’s financial futures since 1836, and strive to build a better society, while improving the lives of our customers and creating value for shareholders.
We are one of the world’s largest asset managers and provide powerful asset origination capabilities. Together, these underpin our retirement and protection solutions: we are an international player in pension risk transfer, in UK and US life insurance, and in UK workplace pensions and retirement income.
Our Group Functions provide the services that all areas of the business need. This requires a talented and diverse team behind the scenes, who enable everyone at L&G to do what they do best.
Joining us means helping to improve the lives of our customers and contributing to the success of the business every day.
Job Description
We’re looking for a skilled employment law specialist to join our Legal & Governance team as a Senior Legal Counsel (Employment). In this role, you’ll provide high‑quality, pragmatic advice that supports our colleagues across the UK and internationally. You’ll help us balance commercial ambition with legal risk, ensuring we deliver fair, consistent and thoughtful outcomes for our people and the organisation.
The role is envisaged to be on a part‑time basis, 3 days per week (0.6 FTE), although we are open to considering other part‑time working arrangements to suit a range of working preferences.
What you’ll be doing:
- Providing clear, solutions‑focused employment law advice across a wide range of day‑to‑day and complex matters
- Supporting HR and business leaders with issues including performance, conduct, grievances, sickness absence, flexible working and organisational change
- Advising on senior exits, settlement agreements and contractual terms
- Guiding stakeholders on discrimination, equal pay, holiday pay, working time and other specialist legal topics
- Leading and managing employment litigation and associated legal risk
- Advising on employee‑related aspects of corporate transactions, including due diligence
- Supporting TUPE processes, outsourcing, insourcing and business transformation programmes
- Horizon‑scanning and communicating legal and regulatory developments to ensure proactive compliance
Who we’re looking for:
- A qualified solicitor in England & Wales (or qualified in another jurisdiction with relevant expertise)
- Strong technical knowledge of employment law, ideally gained within financial services or a similarly complex environment
- Bringing post‑qualification experience (typically around 5+ years), while recognising this is a guide only and that we welcome applications from individuals with a range of PQE levels
- Experience advising on a broad range of employment matters, including both day‑to‑day and high‑risk issues
- The ability to translate legal requirements into practical, commercially aware advice
- Confidence managing employment litigation and external counsel
- A collaborative working style with the ability to build trusted relationships across HR, business teams and senior leaders
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present advice clearly and succinctly
- An organised, proactive approach with the ability to prioritise and work independently when needed
Whatever your role, we reward performance and behaviour with a package that looks after all the things that are important to you. Here are some of the benefits we offer:
- The opportunity to participate in our annual, performance -related bonus plan and valuable share schemes
- Generous pension contribution
- Life assurance
- Healthcare Plan (permanent employees only)
- At least 25 days holiday, plus public holidays, 26 days after 2 years’ service. There’s also the option to buy and sell holiday
- Competitive family leave
- Participate in our electric car scheme, which offers employees the option to hire a brand-new electric car through tax efficient salary sacrifice (permanent employees only)
- There are the many discounts we offer – both for our own products and at a range of high street stores and online
- We’re creating net‑zero carbon workplaces by 2030 by investing in our sustainable, modern offices across the UK, all designed to bring people together and elevate the in‑person experience
