Job Description

Position Summary

This is an role within Quality Control in which the Chemist is responsible for preparing analytical samples, operating assigned analytical instrumentation, and generating accurate laboratory data in support of manufactured reference materials. All work is performed in accordance with approved procedures and safety requirements, with results reviewed by independent laboratory staff prior to use or release. The Chemist works primarily in an analytical laboratory environment and routinely handles concentrated acids, organic solvents, and controlled chemical materials.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to capably perform each of the following essential duties:

Business Impact:

  • Prepare aqueous, organic, and metallo organic stock and custom samples in accordance with approved Quality System Procedures.
  • Perform assigned laboratory tasks accurately and on schedule to support production and validation timelines and ensure consistent laboratory execution.

Type of Work:

  • Conducts routine laboratory procedures that support Quality Control operations, including sample preparation, instrument operation, and basic data review.
  • Performs analytical tasks in accordance with established procedures and training, ensuring accuracy and consistency of results.
  • Operates laboratory balances and analytical instrumentation as trained and follows defined workflows to meet production and validation timelines.
  • Identifies obvious issues or deviations and communicates them to senior staff for review and guidance.

Instrumentation:

  • Operate assigned analytical instrumentation such as ICP, GC, and LC systems under established procedures.
  • Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting, escalating complex issues to senior staff or supervision as required.

Procedural Compliance:

  • Follow standard operating procedures, work instructions, and safety requirements at all times.
  • Perform work consistently and reliably within defined quality expectations.

Communications:

  • Communicate effectively with the QC Supervisor, QA personnel, and Production staff regarding routine laboratory activities, deviations, or issues that require escalation.
  • Maintain clear and accurate laboratory documentation.

Data & Metrics:

  • Accurately review and record analytical data and laboratory information using approved data systems and tools.
  • Support laboratory key performance indicators through timely and accurate execution of assigned work.

Physical Demands:

  • This position is primarily based in an Analytical Laboratory environment
  • This position may require creating or generating waste that is hazardous by regulation or that must be handled as hazardous waste regulations and company procedures require.

Safety and Environment:

  • Adhere to company Personal Protective Equipment requirements and safe laboratory practices.
  • Properly handle, label, and dispose of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with regulatory requirements and internal procedures.

Other Duties:

  • Perform other laboratory duties as assigned by management to meet business needs.

Qualifications

Essential Knowledge & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science or Arts degree in chemistry or a related scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant laboratory experience.
  • Prior experience working in a laboratory environment with basic laboratory equipment. Demonstrated ability to follow written procedures, perform calculations, and document work accurately.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Desired Knowledge & Qualifications:

  • Hands on experience in an analytical chemistry laboratory using ICP, ICP MS, GC, and or LC instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems or ERP platforms such as IFS or FileMaker.

Additional Information

Work Condition and Environment

Travel & Time Expectations: Travel less than 5% of working time is expected. This position may be required to work evening or weekend hours in support of business and customer needs.

Work Setting: In person in an analytical laboratory.

Distinctive Safety Conditions: Work environment involves exposure to hazards and/or physical risks, which require following safety precautions and specific personnel training for employees working with hazardous materials and hazardous waste. The individual will experience repetitive motion due to use of a computer as well as pipettes and other laboratory equipment.

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Included but not limited to steel toed shoes, gloves, eye protection, lab coat, ear protection, and respirator.
