Job Description
Duties & Responsibilities
Commissioning Management
- Lead the commissioning of complex electrical systems and ensure integration with associated mechanical, controls, and building systems.
- Develop and implement project-specific commissioning plans, programmes, and procedures.
- Manage commissioning activities from pre-commissioning through to energisation, integrated systems testing (IST), handover, and project close-out.
- Coordinate commissioning activities with project, construction, QA/QC, design teams, subcontractors, and specialist vendors.
- Monitor commissioning progress and ensure key project milestones are achieved.
Electrical Systems
- Oversee the testing and commissioning of:
- HV, MV & LV Electrical Systems
- Switchgear & Protection Systems
- Transformers
- UPS Systems
- Standby Generators
- Lighting & Power Systems
- Earthing & Lightning Protection Systems
- BMS, EPMS & Electrical Controls
- Review and approve commissioning procedures, method statements, switching schedules, and test scripts.
Compliance & Quality
- Ensure all commissioning activities comply with EU directives, IEC/EN standards, local regulations, client specifications, and industry best practice.
- Maintain accurate commissioning records, certification, and turnover documentation.
- Support audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews throughout the project lifecycle.
- Identify and resolve non-conformances while maintaining the highest quality standards.
Health, Safety & Environmental
- Ensure all commissioning activities are carried out in accordance with company HSQE policies and statutory requirements.
- Review and approve RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements).
- Lead commissioning safety reviews, system walkdowns, and energisation risk assessments.
- Promote a proactive safety culture across all commissioning activities.
Stakeholder Management
- Act as the primary point of contact for all commissioning-related matters.
- Liaise with clients, consultants, contractors, utility providers, and equipment manufacturers.
- Attend project and client meetings, providing regular progress updates and technical support.
- Coordinate witness testing, inspections, and final acceptance procedures.
Documentation & Handover
- Manage all commissioning documentation, reports, and testing records.
- Coordinate snagging, defect resolution, and system close-out activities.
- Prepare and manage final turnover and handover packages.
- Support client training, operational readiness, and lessons learned reviews to ensure a successful project handover.
Qualifications
Skills & Qualifications
Educational Background: Degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of electrical building services systems, including HV, MV, and LV distribution, UPS systems, generators, switchgear, protection systems, BMS, and electrical controls. Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex commissioning and system integration issues.
Commissioning Experience: Demonstrable experience managing electrical commissioning activities from pre-commissioning through to energisation, integrated systems testing (IST), handover, and project close-out.
Leadership & Team Management: Proven ability to lead commissioning teams, coordinate subcontractors and specialist vendors, and collaborate effectively with project stakeholders to achieve successful project outcomes.
Project Management: Strong planning and organisational skills with experience managing commissioning programmes, resources, and project deliverables to meet schedule, budget, and quality objectives.
Attention to Detail: Exceptional attention to detail, ensuring all systems are tested, documented, commissioned, and handed over in accordance with project specifications and regulatory requirements.
Problem Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify, investigate, and resolve technical and operational issues efficiently.
Communication & Stakeholder Management: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to prepare technical reports and provide clear updates to clients, consultants, and project teams.
Health, Safety & Compliance: Strong understanding of EU regulations, IEC/EN standards, and industry best practices, with a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental (HSQE) compliance.
Software & Documentation: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and commissioning management platforms, with experience producing commissioning reports, test records, handover documentation, and turnover packages.
Desirable
- Data Centre or Mission Critical project experience.
- Authorised Person (AP) or Senior Authorised Person (SAP) qualification.
- Experience of energisation planning and Integrated Systems Testing (IST).
- Membership of a recognised professional institution such as the IET.
