Job Description

Reporting to the Principal, the Library Media Specialist is responsible for delivering effective, high-quality, rigorous instruction in their content areas that produces unmatched results and student understanding. Teachers will perform additional duties, as necessary, to ensure that all students learn. 

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop a thorough knowledge of subject area and grade level curricula

  •  Model the effective and enthusiastic use of books, video, multimedia and other creative expressions of information and sources of pleasure and information to students.

  • Maintains a library media center environment which is conducive to student learning.

  • Selects, acquires, circulates, and maintains materials and equipment in a manner that effectively supports the instructional program.

  • Classifies, catalogs, processes, and organizes materials.

  • Periodically reevaluate library collection to ensure that it is current, culturally relevant, attractive, and well balanced.

  • Actively promotes the perception of the media center as an extension of the classroom.

  • Researches and provides a wide variety of resources and supplemental materials.

  • Provides guidance in the selection of appropriate materials for students and teachers.

  • Initiates and organizes opportunities to promote reading and reading appreciation.

  • Keeps current on technological trends that will impact library services and can be used to support classroom curriculum.

  • Other professional duties as may be assigned by the Principal

  • Leveled Reading Assessments

  • Track Literacy Data (Accelerated Reader, MARC records, etc)

  • Design library programming + events (After School book clubs, Literacy Night, Scholastic Book Fair, Read-A-Thons, etc.)

Qualifications

Required

  • Active Tennessee state licensure and certification - endorsement matching subject area & grade band

  • Commitment to working with educationally underserved students

  • Commitment to the design and development of the school

  • Bachelor's degree

 

Preferred

  • At least two years of librarian/media specialist experience

  • Master's in Education

  • Experience working in an urban school and/or charter network

Additional Information

Salary for this position is competitive and depends on prior experience, degree attainment, and credentials. A competitive benefits package will also be offered.

 

ADA Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods standing and actively monitoring student behavior 
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
  • Must be able to traverse library and adjust height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach each child
  • Must be able to facilitate room transitions by walking through hallways and up and down stairs with students
