Organizational Overview

KIPP NC is a network of eight high-performing, college-preparatory public charter schools providing an academically rigorous and joyous school experience to more than 3,500 students in grades K-12 in Charlotte, Durham, Gaston, and Halifax. KIPP NC supports several thousand alumni on their journey to and through high school, college, and career.   

KIPP NC is building on a rich tradition of academic excellence and relentless fight for social justice present from the founding of both KIPP ENC and KIPP Charlotte. KIPP ENC is the second oldest KIPP region in the nation. In its 20 years of operation, KIPP ENC has been a cornerstone for students and families in rural Gaston and Halifax, operating two primary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. Over the past five years, it grew to serve even more students by opening up a middle school in Durham, an urban center in the center part of the state. KIPP Charlotte, which grew out of the strong traditions and academics of KIPP ENC, has supported students and families for the past 13 years, operating one primary school and one middle school in the largest city in North Carolina.

KIPP North Carolina is building upon the successes and experiences of KIPP ENC and KIPP Charlotte to provide inclusive school environments and an educational program that will enable our students to lead full lives and equip graduates to be future leaders and agents of change in North Carolina and beyond. KIPP NC is engaging in direct, anti-racist work, and contributes meaningfully to the dismantling of structures of inequality within our organization, schools, and classrooms. We’re committed to expanding our efforts to embed anti-racism in all of our activities and engagements within our classrooms and schools, across our organization, and throughout the State of North Carolina. The Behavior Support Assistant (BSA) works with the school team to maintain a safe and nurturing learning environment for students and staff. Reporting to the Dean of Culture and Instruction, the BSA  will maintain a consistent presence throughout the building, develop positive relationships with students and families, and support individual students to develop skills and strategies to engage safely and positively within the school learning environment. Note: This position is for the SY 2021-2022 only and is not guaranteed for future school years. 

 Roles and Responsibilities

• Executes the vision for a safe learning environment, as defined by the School Leadership Team

• Collaborates with the Dean of Culture and Instruction on family communication regarding student behavior, as well as attendance

• Enforces the discipline plan / behavior management system of the school, which includes both incentives and consequences

• Monitors lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, hallway transitions, assemblies, dances, sporting events, and other events where there are large activities and transitions at the school.

• Supports students with behavior management, including but not limited to: providing student breaks, providing one-on-one instruction, supporting with tantrums, implementing an individualized behavior plan, and communicating with families regarding student behavior and progress

• Executes behavior intervention plans, as needed, for individual students

• Facilitates restorative conversations and reflection for students with challenging behaviors

• Manages lunch/recess reflection room and in-school suspension, as needed

• Builds strong, collaborative relationships with students and staff

• Observes, documents, and maintains data regarding student behavior, attendance, and academic progress

• Makes self available for all teachers and staff to support any disruptive behavior or needed redirects in the classroom

• Observes and documents behavior of individual students; maintains accurate logs of student progress.

• Responds to crisis and routine calls for assistance from staff and/or students; diffuses and de-escalates potentially volatile situations

• Utilizes a variety of deescalation and crisis intervention techniques to address challenging student behaviors

• At the direction of the DCI, participates in and supports family engagement activities

• As needed, provides class coverages and support 

• Completes all assigned duties and responsibilities as assigned by the DCI and the school leadership

Required Qualifications

• A belief that all students will do well if they can, and that it is our responsibilities as educators to support, teach, and address student lagging skills through a variety of strategies

• Possess a deep commitment to both racial equity and improving the lives of kids from low-income communities

• High school diploma 

• Additional specialized trainings/certifications or two years of related college coursework, or willingness to pursue additional certifications and development

• 2+ years full time experience in education, mental health, or related community service with youth

• Pass Criminal Background Check

• Demonstrated commitment to closing the opportunity gap

• Zest, grit, professionalism, creativity, growth mindset, solutions-orientated, and a sense of humor

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree

• 3+ years of full time experience working as a behavior support professional, EC assistant, instructional assistant, or teacher

• Experience working with Middle and High School aged children

• Active Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) Certification

• Fluency in Spanish

Compensation

The current salary range for this role is $25- 35K. Additionally, we offer a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package including:
