About the team

Data Engineering at loveholidays underpins our vision to become the most loved OTA in Europe by providing a self-service data platform that enables data assisted decisions at scale. Our systems ingest data from hundreds of sources, query petabytes of data daily from tens of thousands of BigQuery tables containing trillions of rows.

The impact you’ll have

  • Drive the company's overall technical strategy and data governance policies

  • Own the evolution of our Data Mesh architecture, promoting distributed data ownership

  • Lead a team of talented data engineers, fostering their growth and ensuring delivery of high-quality solutions

  • Represent loveholidays data engineering externally by writing and presenting

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to enable data-driven decision making across the organisation

  • Implement best practices in data engineering to ensure our data systems are scalable, reliable, and fast

Your day-to-day

In this role, you can expect to:

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and processes

  • Optimise data storage and retrieval systems for efficiency and cost-effectiveness

  • Mentor and guide your team of data engineers, providing technical leadership and code reviews

  • Partner cross-functionally with engineers, data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders to identify and fulfil data requirements, while championing best practices, data tooling and processesWork on improving data quality, accessibility, findability and usability across the organisation

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex data-related issues

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in data engineering, particularly within the Google Cloud ecosystem

Your skillset

  • Leadership experience within a high-autonomy and accountability environment

  • Software development tools and practices applied to the data engineering domain

  • Proven experience: A proven track record of building and optimising data infrastructure at scale

  • Technical expertise: Deep understanding of data orchestration, ingestion, processing and storage mechanisms, along with knowledge of modern query engines

  • Strong proficiency in Python and SQL

  • Extensive experience with modern data technologies (e.g., BigQuery, Airflow, Spark, Kafka)

Desirable

  • Familiarity with data visualisation tools (e.g., Looker, Tableau)

  • Familiarity with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)

  • Knowledge of dimensional modelling and data warehouse design

  • Experience with dbt (data build tool) for data transformation

  • Familiarity with Monte Carlo Data or similar data observability tools

  • Experience with Airflow for workflow orchestration

  • Contributions to open-source projects or technical blog posts

  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, particularly Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
