Job Description

The Medical Coding and Billing Specialist is responsible for reviewing patient medical records, accurately assigning/verifying codes based on procedures provided, and assist in receivables through researches on unpaid claims.

  • Reviews medical records and assigned outpatient/professional fee medical codes, using the current Internal Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding (HCPCS).
  • Work with contracted facilities to resolve conflicts in invoices and assigned outpatient/professional fee medical codes.
  • Works with local physicians and medical facilities, to ensure accuracy of coding information and report missing or incomplete documentation.
  • Remains abreast of coding knowledge and follows regulatory requirements by continuing education requirements for certification and maintaining working knowledge of on-going changes to CPT, HCPS, and ICD codes.
  • Stay up to date on billing and coding knowledge as well as Electronic Health Record system (EHR) by actively participate in internal training conducted by Medical Coding and Billing Supervisor.
  • Ensures protection of private health and personal information and adheres to all HIPAA and PCI compliance regulations for monitoring billing and coding-related data.
  • Actively participates in day-to-day team discussions to improve processes.
  • Serves as resource regarding insurance resolutions and coding questions
  • Completes additional duties as assigned by project leadership as needed.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Experience with electronic medical records and billing processes. Experience in Aprima a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook)

Required Work Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in coding, billing, or collections.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and Outlook).

Required Qualifications

  • Certification in Medical Coding or Billing and Coding Specialist
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required
  • ADP II Clearance
