Job Description

Role summary: 

The Flight Doctor maintains overall responsibility for all clinical care including the pre-flight assessment, in flight clinical assessment and medical management of patients in accordance with the contract specifications. The purpose of the role is to facilitate the operational readiness and performance of the Iqarus AMET team in support to the Mission in Somalia. 

Duties and responsibilities: 

  • Carry out immediate clinical evaluation and management of emergency patients in the aeromedical setting. 

  • Work within a multidisciplinary flight team to the benefit of the patient.  

  • Ensures that all medical records are properly kept and maintained 

  • Provision of clinical reporting to Iqarus Regional Medical Officer 

  • Maintain a safe working environment in line with both Iqarus and client guidelines 

  • Ensure best practice in line with clinical guidelines and SOPs 

  • Maintain clinical relevance and fitness to practice in line with own national licensure. 

  • Maintain personal fitness in line with day-to-day job requirements.    

  • Support the clinical excellence framework under direction from the Chief Medical Officer 

  • Provide liaison with external agencies where required to promote chain of care continuity and professional referral/patient handover. 

  • Participate fully in Departmental and Facility training and exercises.  Support the delivery and administration of such training as required. 

  • Participate fully in Departmental and Facility Quality and Assurance activities.  Support the delivery and administration of such Q & A activities.

Qualifications

• A university degree (MBBS/MBChB/MD) in combination with post-graduate experience to be able to practice medicine without supervision.

• Completion of board-certified/post-graduate certified specialty training by an appropriate body.

• At least two (2) years of clinical practice as a licensed specialist after completing the relevant specialty training.

• Currently registered by a national medical board or council to practice medicine in their respective country. License validity should cover the deployment duration. In lieu of licensure (where applicable), a letter of good standing should be provided by the relevant national authority. The license validity should cover the deployment duration.

• Certification in advanced acute trauma care and pre-hospital trauma life support or equivalent training - certification pre-hospital trauma life support or equivalent training within 12 months prior to their deployment.

• Aeromedical evacuation training and related qualifying experiences are required.

• Experience in providing treatment under night flying conditions and with medical equipment compatible with NVG (Night Vision Goggles)

• English proficiency- a minimum of Level B2 is required.

Additional Information

Rotations are typically 8 weeks on duty and 8 weeks off duty, but dependent on the project.  Flights, food and accommodation are provided whilst on duty at the project site.
