Job Description
Primary Function of Position:
As a key member of Intuitive’s APAC regional team and the GPA function, the APAC Sr Director of Global Public Affairs will be responsible for managing Intuitive’s regional public affairs strategy, activities and engagement. This role will include managing team members with public affairs, government affairs, media relations and patient advocacy responsibilities in China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and India, providing leadership that empowers in-market direct reports and creates synergies across geographies.
In addition, the APAC Sr Director of Global Public Affairs will work with internal stakeholders to develop and implement short- and long-term strategies to:
- Support Intuitive’s commercial, policy and advocacy objectives;
- Protect and promote the company’s interests and positions with relevant external stakeholders (media, policymakers, industry/trade associations, think tanks and third-party organizations);
- Provide internal counsel, subject matter and regional expertise; and
- Educate and engage policymakers and broader stakeholder network about Intuitive’s business, technology and policy priorities.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Government Affairs and Stakeholder Engagement
- Work with in-market and headquarters-based GPA team members and cross-functional business partners to drive an integrated government affairs strategy that advances our market, regional and global business objectives.
- Conduct deep stakeholder mapping to inform and drive the development of a strong network of external stakeholders, such as key policymakers and influencers, industry and trade associations, think tanks and academic institutions, medical societies, media and patient advocacy groups.
- Represent Intuitive’s position in direct discussion with diverse government stakeholders and third-party organizations.
- Monitor, analyze and influence business-impacting policy, political, regulatory and economic trends and developments, and make appropriate recommendations to company leadership.
- Draft, edit, curate and implement strategic policy-focused materials and messaging.
- Manage external government affairs/public affairs firms to support strategy and activity as needed.
Media Relations and Communications
- Develop and implement proactive and reactive communications plans and protocols designed to raise awareness of Intuitive as well as anticipate risks and challenges.
- Oversee in-market public affairs and media relations team members on media relations strategies and priorities, including proactive media engagement, thought leadership/corporate positioning and corporate reputation strategy and activities, including issues management.
- Manage external PR firms to support strategy and in-market activity as needed.
People Management + Organizational Leadership
- Serve as a leader, advisor and advocate for direct reports in key markets. Create a community mindset that allows for sharing across markets and strong regional synergies.
- Build a deep understanding of and ability to clearly convey Intuitive’s mission and impact on society, business landscape, commercial strategy, technology, and clinical and economic value proposition.
- Develop a strong network of internal relationships across business units and functions to drive and maintain alignment.
- Regularly participate in and represent department’s perspective at internal meetings.
- Collaborate with GPA team members to ensure that efforts the company undertakes are coordinated and complementary.
Qualifications
- Minimum 15+ years of experience in government affairs, public affairs or policy focused role(s) in government, multinational healthcare or technology company, industry/trade association or public affairs agency.
- Strong knowledge and successful track record of engagement with APAC policy and public affairs stakeholders and institutions to drive results-oriented public affairs strategy and results.
- Significant direct experience leading public affairs – including government affairs, policy, advocacy, PR and issues management, in and across key markets, including China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, India.
- Demonstrated people management and organizational leadership experience; experience empowering and supporting direct reports, articulating an internal vision and business case for functional strategy.
- Strong experience and understanding of medical device, healthcare or pharmaceutical industries preferred.
- Ability to work in a complex, global, and highly matrixed multinational organization, with capability to collaborate, communicate about, and manage portfolio.
- Strong, skilled, effective strategic thinker and communicator with track record of distilling complex ideas into clear, effective and actionable strategies and content.
- Proven ability to build consensus around tough decisions in a highly collaborative and interdependent organization.
- Strong project manager able to map out strategies, protocols, and milestones, and manage concurrent projects in collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
- Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills, flexible mindset.
- Clear, concise communicator, writer, editor, and presenter in English.
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree required, relevant advanced degree a plus.
