Job Description
Primary Function of Position
Intuitive is the leader in robotic assisted surgery and robotic assisted bronchoscopy, designing and manufacturing complex systems for use with da Vinci and ION procedures. These systems employ a combination of reusable, single use surgical instruments and accessories for each surgical procedure.
The Senior Director of Program Management Office (PMO) is responsible to provide strategic direction and oversee the execution of advanced R&D and new product development programs/projects from concept to commercialization aligned with business goals. This includes aligning strategic objectives with project execution, developing robust project plans, managing risks/budgets, facilitating communications & escalations to achieve desired business outcomes and customer benefits. The Senior Director leads a team of project managers and works across functional leaders to identify resources, responsibilities and ensure timely progress on project milestone, providing portfolio visibility to the organization.
Essential Job Duties
- Provides inspiring vision for the PMO team and fosters an environment that encourages creativity, innovation and crisp execution:
- Directs activities of project managers responsible for execution of R&D and New Product Development (NPD) goals and deliverables.
- Leverages PMI best practices, frameworks and industry tools to improve project planning, risk mitigations, execution & value delivery.
- Attracts and retains best talent. Ability to coach and develop team members.
- Works directly with Business Unit leadership team to support strategic planning, budgeting and portfolio assurance to achieve projected growth.
- Oversees the execution of R&D programs from concept to commercialization aligned to company strategy and business outcomes
- Partners with the quality and regulatory organization to develop and refine processes to support advanced R&D activities in context of a more mature organization.
- Estimates and identifies resource capacity/capabilities needed to achieve project goals through established resource planning models and tools. Drives escalations to close major resource gaps with BU LT.
- Drives escalations to close major gaps; or balance through resource leveling or appropriate tradeoffs.
- Standardizes project management levels of services, frameworks, tools and key performance indicators to enable project success.
- Interacts internally and externally with executive level management, requiring negotiation of critical matters.
- Directs cross-functional teams in context of new product development, product launches, regulatory submission and other high priority projects.
- Leads phase gate reviews for all new product development projects within the BU portfolio, ensuring alignment to business objectives and effective decision making.
- Proactively manages changes in project scope, identifying impact, tradeoffs, and associated contingency plans.
- Leads key PMO initiatives and process improvements to increase R&D productivity, scalability and drive efficiencies with appropriate inter-departmental and support staff personnel.
- Provides regular portfolio updates to executive leadership and actively communicates status on key milestones through dashboards and metrics.
- Able to work in a strong matrix organization and lead without direct authority. Able to develop strong relationships and influence stakeholders.
- Supports finance in tracking and reporting project spending on periodic basis.
- Oversees development of project documentation including project charters, project plans, RFP’s, process maps, and business requirements.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
- Minimum of 15 years of project management experience in medical device industry or highly regulated industry.
- Minimum 7 years of leadership (direct team management experience).
- Proficiency with Project Management industry standards, techniques, tools and methodologies.
