Job Description

This position will support the US Department of Veterans Affairs Critical Staffing Program. The person in this position will represent International SOS and provide services outlined below:

The Medical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for supporting all medical laboratory functions. This includes performing advanced testing on blood, tissue, urine, stool, amniotic fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, and other body specimens in a lab. They operate and maintain equipment to examine these samples, ensuring precise and timely results. The Medical Laboratory Supervisor will handle the advanced testing, quality control, troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and advanced laboratory functions.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Perform blood collection requiring knowledge of clinical science to understand the multiplicity of tests and specimen requirements, the mechanics of venipuncture and patient preparation.
  • Perform phlebotomy to obtain patient specimens for laboratory testing including blood cultures and compatibility samples.
  • Accession and receive samples into VA laboratory information system package for in house testing or send outs to reference laboratories.
  • Instruct patients in proper collection of 24-hour urine and other samples collected at home.
  • Prepare collection, measure, and record 24-hour urine volumes.
  • Transport specimens to the laboratory including those requiring special handlings.
  • Look up laboratory order numbers and patient information for outpatient draws.
  • Use numbering system to check patients into the laboratory.
  • Answer the phone and direct calls to other laboratory sections.
  • Establish and maintain effective interpersonal skills and good customer relations with patients, families, and all other medical center employees.
  • Provide general clerical and administrative support for the area.
  • Stock and maintain specialized supplies used in the drawing area.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements/Certifications:

  • Minimum one-year experience.
  • Certified in Basic Life Support BLS (CPR). Certifications must be obtained or issued by the American Heart Association (AHA), an organization recognized by the AHA, or Military Training Network (MTN) and maintained during the contract.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • May require bending, stooping, and lifting to 25 lbs.

Other Special Qualifications:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to relocate to the project site for the duration of the contract.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Pass/possess VA Public Trust Clearance.

Compensation|  Min: $21hr        Max: $38hr             

Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant’s background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with geographical market data.
