Job Description

As a Data Architect, you will play a key role in shaping how data is designed, stored, governed, and exchanged across the organisation. Working closely with business stakeholders, IT project teams, and the Data Office, you will ensure that data models, flows, and documentation comply with internal standards and external regulations (e.g. BCBS 239, GDPR).

You will contribute to the continuous improvement of the Enterprise Data Model and support the adoption of robust data governance practices across projects and regions.

Key Responsibilities

Data Architecture & Modelling

  • Design and maintain logical and physical data models for critical systems.
  • Produce and review data dictionaries, metadata, and data catalog entries.
  • Ensure consistency and alignment with the Enterprise Data Model.
  • Maintain accurate data lineage and master data relationships within architecture tools.

Governance, Risk & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and group standards (BCBS 239, GDPR, CCPA).
  • Perform data assessments for new or changing IT assets, covering:
    • Data storage and retention
    • Encryption and security mechanisms
    • Cloud deployment models
    • Data exchanges and interfaces
  • Verify that architectures comply with CIB-wide data governance rules and update architecture repositories accordingly.

Project & Stakeholder Support

  • Partner with project teams to identify and guide all data-related activities (data knowledge, privacy, security, architecture).
  • Embed data governance principles into project delivery pipelines.
  • Collaborate with Data Quality Analysts to resolve data quality issues impacting reporting and analytics.
  • Work closely with the Data Office, functional and technical architects, IT security, business continuity teams, and local IT.

Lifecycle & Change Management

  • Manage application lifecycle activities, including recertification, decommissioning, and data archiving.
  • Ensure architecture documentation remains accurate and up to date.
  • Deliver training sessions, workshops, and knowledge-sharing initiatives on data management best practices.

Team & Environment

  • Part of a global community of ~25 Data Architects, reporting to the Head of Data Architecture.
  • Operates in an international, multi-location environment, interacting with both business and IT stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Information Management, or a related field.
  • 2–5 years of experience in data architecture or data management roles, preferably in banking or financial services.
  • Strong knowledge of data management concepts: data modelling, data quality, metadata, and data security.
  • Experience with at least one data governance or cataloguing tool (e.g. Collibra, Informatica, Microsoft Purview).
  • Hands-on experience with data management platforms such as:
    • Abacus, Ab Initio, Talend Data Catalog, EBX/xDM.
  • Experience with modelling and architecture tools (e.g. Archi, PowerDesigner).
  • Knowledge of cloud environments, encryption mechanisms, and data format standards (JSON, XML, SWIFT).
  • Familiarity with data visualisation tools (Power BI, Tableau) and/or data science platforms (e.g. Dataiku).
  • Certifications such as DAMA, TOGAF, or other architecture-related qualifications are a plus.
