Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

  • Cleans, inspects, assembles, packages, disinfects, and sterilizes all surgical instruments and supplies used in operating rooms, outpatient departments, emergency rooms, and delivery rooms
  • Documents and monitors all sterilization processes including steam, ETOH, Sterrad, and high-level disinfectants to ensure compliance with established standards
  • Supplies various departments with properly assembled procedure-specific case carts based on surgeon preference cards and pending surgical needs
  • Receives, unpacks, shelves, and maintains appropriate inventory levels of sterile supplies using proper rotation principles

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*Service & Operations*

  1. Retrieves, counts, disinfects, and assembles surgical trays using appropriate cleaning processes including manual washing and washer/disinfector equipment
  2. Inspects instruments and equipment for cleanliness and functionality; follows established repair procedures when needed
  3. Assembles and prepares trays for sterilization according to tray listings with accurate instrument counts and proper documentation
  4. Monitors inventory levels to ensure adequate supplies and equipment availability; identifies outdated items requiring resterilization
  5. Responds to and fulfills requisitions and stat requests in a timely manner
  6. Assembles procedure-specific case carts according to surgeon specifications and patient needs

  1. Maintains a safe work environment and adheres to all regulatory standards and HFHS policies and procedures
  2. Participates in compliance monitoring and assists with implementation of policies and procedures that ensure clinical excellence and regulatory compliance
  3. Completes required educational and regulatory compliance training and certifications

*Collaboration & Communication*

  1. Demonstrates effective communication and active listening with medical, nursing, administrative, and ancillary staff
  2. Builds respectful working relationships with peers and promotes optimal collaboration across departments
  3. Supports service excellence and maintains accountability for upholding departmental standards
  4. Performs other related duties as assigned by management

Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Medical terminology course preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Computer proficiency and customer service experience

CERTIFICATIONS & TRAINING:

  • Central Service Certification required
  • BCLS certification preferred
  • Successful completion of 120-day orientation program
  • Ongoing compliance training and continuing education

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds and push heavy carts
  • Extensive walking, standing, and visual inspection capabilities
  • Work in healthcare environment with exposure to chemicals, sharp instruments, and body fluids
  • Tolerance for noisy equipment, steam, and humid conditions

Additional Information

Location: Outpatient Surgery Center - 1125 East Michigan Ave., Jackson MI

Schedule: 8 hour shift- 8:00am-4:30pm OR 9:00am-5:30pm, Monday-Friday

No weekends or holidays

Full-time, Day Shift, 40 hours/week
