Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

As an Outpatient Complex Coder, you'll be the backbone of accurate healthcare reimbursement and data integrity. You'll leverage established coding principles and procedures to expertly review, analyze, and code diagnostic and procedural information from patient medical records—ensuring providers get reimbursed fairly and patients receive the care they deserve. Your meticulous work directly supports critical functions including medical research initiatives, patient care evaluation, and strategic administrative decision-making that impacts patient outcomes.

In this role, you're not just processing data—you're building the foundation that healthcare organizations rely on. By accurately abstracting information from medical records and compiling comprehensive patient databases, you enable better research, improved care quality, and optimized reimbursement. Your expertise ensures strict compliance with coding guidelines, third-party reimbursement policies, regulations, and accreditation standards, making you an essential partner in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the healthcare system.

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Review and analyze diagnostic and procedural information from patient medical records using established coding principles
  • Code complex outpatient cases with precision to support accurate reimbursement and billing processes
  • Abstract and compile patient data for medical research projects, care evaluation, and administrative decision-making
  • Maintain strict adherence to coding guidelines, third-party reimbursement policies, and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and quality benchmarks
  • Contribute to provider-patient continuity through accurate, reliable data management
  • Optimize reimbursement outcomes while maintaining coding accuracy and integrity

 

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
  • Additional specialty coding certification required or five (5) years coding experience.
  • One to two (1-2) years college or additional coursework in Accounting, Business, Healthcare Administration or Medical Record Sciences preferred.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, disease processes, medical terminology, pharmacology, and coding systems.
  • Minimum of two (2) years coding experience required.
  • Specialty coding experience preferred.


CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), CPC, or CCScertification required.
