In December 2024, we began providing health, mental health, and wellbeing services across the onshore Immigration Detention network. Our team of nurses, general practitioners, and allied health professionals offer a range of healthcare services, including health assessments, chronic disease management, health promotion, wound management, immunizations, and other primary health interventions. HCA also launched a 24/7 Virtual Care Centre (VCC), offering remote healthcare through telehealth and video consultations to enhance onsite care for detainees
Job Description
In this role, you will provide comprehensive mental health assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care to individuals in detention. Working as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team, you will support improved health outcomes through evidence-based, person-centred and culturally responsive care.
You will play a key role in coordinating timely access to appropriate health services, including medical, nursing, drug and alcohol, and allied health supports, while ensuring care is delivered with dignity, respect, and an understanding of individual values, beliefs, and cultural needs.
Work Days & Hours: Monday to Sunday - No night shifts!
- AM: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm
To work within this role, you must either:
- Hold a postgraduate qualification in Mental Health with a minimum of 5 years’ MH specialty experience, or
- Have a minimum of 7 years’ specialist Mental Health nursing experience if they do not hold a postgraduate qualification.
How You’ll Make an Impact!
- Deliver comprehensive mental health assessments, care planning, implementation, and evaluation
- Conduct mental state examinations, risk assessments, crisis intervention, and formulation
- Provide evidence-based mental health interventions and therapeutic support
- Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences and collaborative care planning
- Support crisis management planning and ongoing risk mitigation strategies
- Coordinate access to appropriate primary and specialist health services
- Contribute to psychoeducation, treatment planning, and medication support (where appropriate)
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation, including EMR records and discharge summaries
- Participate in continuous quality improvement and service development initiatives
- Ensure compliance with clinical guidelines, legislation, and organisational policies
- Contribute to a safe, respectful, and culturally responsive care environment
Let’s talk about you!
To be successful in this role, you will bring current unrestricted AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse (Division 1) and will either hold a postgraduate qualification in Mental Health (AQF Level 8 or higher) with a minimum of five years’ specialist mental health experience, or have a minimum of seven years’ specialist mental health nursing experience if you do not hold a postgraduate qualification. You will have extensive experience in mental health assessment, crisis intervention, and therapeutic care, along with a strong understanding of recovery-oriented practice and multidisciplinary team approaches. You will demonstrate excellent communication, critical thinking, and clinical reasoning skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. You will be adaptable in a fast-paced and changing clinical environment and bring strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and electronic medical records systems. You will also have a sound understanding of relevant legislation and clinical governance requirements, with experience in correctional health, forensic mental health, AOD services, or other high-acuity settings highly regarded.
