Job Description
He angituutanga: The opportunity
We have an awesome opportunity for an experienced Communication and Engagement Advisor to join our team and help share Hamilton’s community and visitor experience story.
Reporting to the Communication and Engagement Manager, you’ll provide operational support and high-quality advice across a diverse and highly visible portfolio, including parks and playgrounds, City Safe, regulatory and compliance, animal education and control, pools and libraries, as well as our wider visitor experience work.
From supporting how people experience our public spaces and facilities day to day, to helping shape how residents and visitors connect with our city, no two days in this role are the same. You’ll be working alongside teams across Council, seeking community insights, supporting change, and helping people understand the services and experiences that make Hamilton a great place to live and visit.
You will:
- Plan and deliver innovative communication and engagement initiatives.
- Implement communication strategies.
- Work proactively to identify and manage reputational risks and opportunities.
- Ensure media are responded to in a timely and consistent way.
- Work across Council to effectively manage and enhance Council’s reputation.
- Drive and deliver best practice community engagement activities.
- Establish and maintain trusted relationships both internal and external.
This is a 12 month fixed-term position.

We’re looking for an expert communicator who is passionate about connecting with our community. Our environment is fast-paced and dynamic, so we are looking for a collaborative team member who can deliver excellence in high-tempo situations.
You’re a team-player who enjoys working on multiple projects at once, juggling deadlines and can change hats swiftly. You think and write creatively and will always consider our diverse community in preparing your communication and engagement initiatives.
You will manage issues and processes, enable solutions and bring all stakeholders along on the journey. A knack for taking highly technical information and making it accessible and engaging for all our audiences is essential. You’re tech-savvy and can pick up new tools quickly. Equally, you love to get out and about and engage with Hamiltonians.
You’ll be part of a fun and ambitious team who push the boundaries and shape the way we do things at Hamilton City Council.
Ideally, you’ll have:
- 3+ years’ experience in a communication and engagement advisor role.
- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders (internal and external).
- Demonstrated success in leading the communication and engagement for significant high-risk projects and programmes of work.
- Relevant tertiary qualification.
- Experience working in local government (preferred, but not essential).
