Job Description

The Office of the Pro Vice Chancellor (Health), led by Professor Scott Bell, is seeking an experienced Study Coordinator / Project Manager to support the coordination of local and national research studies on mycobacterial pathogens in patients with cystic fibrosis and chronic lung diseases.

The role focuses on understanding the prevalence, risk factors, and potential transmission pathways of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), particularly Mycobacterium abscessus, using applied research methods including whole genome sequence analysis. This position combines research, project management, and high-level administrative support to the Chief Investigator, ensuring effective collaboration with investigators, stakeholders, and multiple clinical and laboratory sites nationally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct internationally competitive research in medical and molecular mycobacteriology.
  • Lead project management activities including organising team meetings, monitoring timelines and budgets, and preparing reports (including HREC and regulatory submissions).
  • Support grant applications, manuscript preparation, and reporting for NHMRC, MRFF, and other funding bodies.
  • Collaborate with clinicians, scientists, and postgraduates to develop joint research projects, particularly with Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service and Pathology Queensland.
  • Maintain awareness of relevant scientific literature and contribute an independent academic approach.
  • Ensure safe laboratory practices and compliance with all relevant legislation, University policies, and governance requirements.
  • Contribute to the Institute’s academic service, engagement with industry, government, professional bodies, and community initiatives.

About you 

  • PhD in medical microbiology, molecular microbiology, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated expertise in lung microbiology and mycobacteriology, with a track record of high-quality research publications.
  • Advanced project management skills, including experience preparing ethics and governance documents, managing multi-site research studies, and coordinating teams.
  • Strong skills in data acquisition, database management, and data analysis; experience in bioinformatics/sequence analysis is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across multiple sites and with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Resilience, flexibility, creativity, and digital literacy to thrive in a dynamic research environment.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Commitment to compliance with legislation, University policies, equity, and health & safety, reflecting high standards of professionalism and ethical conduct.

What we can offer
This is a fixed-term (12-month), part-time (70% FTE) position primarily based at the Griffith University Gold Coast. As Griffith is a multi-site University you may be required to work across other locations.

Griffith University’s sites are located on the lands of the Yugarabul, Yuggera, Jagera, Turrbal, Yugambeh and Kombumerri peoples.

Salary Range
The full time equivalent base salary will be HEW Level 8 range $113,713 - $127,923 per annum + 17% superannuation. The total FTE package will be in the range $133,044 - $149,670 per annum.
