Why? Griffith brings together exceptional minds like yours from across the globe and from all walks of life. Here, we do incredible work, questioning and challenging, always in the pursuit of excellence.

Job Description

2025 will mark Griffith University’s 50th anniversary. The University will transition from being a “young” university to an established institution confidently taking on the significant challenges of the 21st century. This is an exciting time to join the Griffith University senior leadership team.

Griffith’s vision as a university of influence is being realised by placing students at the centre of all that we do, developing graduates confident to face the future, and undertaking ground-breaking research that makes major contributions in solving tomorrow’s problems.  As University Librarian you will play an integral role in the realisation of these goals.

Griffith Library currently has six (6) established campus libraries covering our five (5) campus locations and delivers to our digital campus. In addition, we have recently acquired the historic CBD Treasury Building where we will establish another CBD campus – this has been a core pillar of Griffith’s Strategic Plan and will serve as a ‘front door’ for engagement with industry and the community, enabling deep partnerships with commerce, industry and government, while also supporting the revitalisation of Brisbane’s City in the lead-up to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Griffith Library delivers more than traditional resources, services and skills to students and staff. It is recognised as an inclusive place for knowledge sharing and collaboration across disciplines, providing safe and welcoming spaces (both physical and virtual) which encourage reflection, research and innovative thinking. Our services and activities are interwoven into all aspects of the University’s business and provide important touchpoints across the student journey. Our staff are valued partners with scholars and researchers, ensuring that contemporary scholarly information practices underpin Griffith’s research, teaching and learning.

Digital disruption, globalisation of knowledge, evolving pedagogical models, increasing complexity of and reliance on data, plus national policy and funding uncertainty will continue to be factors impacting Griffith. These, in combination with the scholarly information and communication landscape undergoing fundamental change, will be major Library concerns.

As University Librarian, build on our reputation for operational excellence. As a pro-active and student-centred collaboration partner, purposefully contribute to Griffith’s priorities and embrace the emerging opportunities of the rapidly evolving tertiary environment.

Reporting to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Education), you will use your professional expertise to contribute to the business of the University. At Griffith University, our student journey is a top priority with diversity, inclusion and equity being key components of our culture. As such, you will:

  • Use your creative thinking and strategic leadership skills to drive meaningful change both within the Library and across the University.
  • Develop and sustain strategic partnerships with other elements of the University to ensure library learning, support and research services and resources are known, utilised, and are in alignment with and leveraged towards the University’s aspirations.
  • Exhibiting good practice, lead and promote compliance with relevant legislation and University policies and procedures, including equity and health & safety.

About you
What matters most is your drive to create a brighter future that benefits all. Through our core principles of excellence, ethics and engagement, you’ll thrive on seeing the direct and lasting impact you’ll have on every community and every future.

You will also have:

  • Postgraduate degree (or equivalent knowledge and training) in library or information science or other relevant discipline, with library leadership experience in the educational or GLAM sector.
  • Membership of or eligibility for associate membership of the Australian Library and Information Association.
  • Demonstrated highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including people centred business transformation and change management experience.
  • A deep understanding of people and leadership, experience across service models, data and information in the government and education sector.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience in contemporary research and scholarly information practices and trends.
  • Evidence of a commitment to deliberate, evidence-based and data driven strategic thinking and the ability to successfully navigate the increasingly rapid advances in technology which support innovative collaboration, shared infrastructure, new ways of working in a global digital world.
  • Ability to align both business and user expectations to ensure accessible and responsive student-centred services delivering University goals.
