The position will work in the interdisciplinary research hub, SAGE (Sport and Gender Equity). The purpose of Sport and Gender Equity @ Griffith research hub is to lead innovative and impactful research that advances gender equity in sport through a multi-disciplinary research hub connecting scholars, practitioners, athletes and advocates.

The research hub aims to:

  • contribute to knowledge and practice that addresses the complexity of gender inequities and diversity (intersections with culture/race/Indigeneity, sexuality, disability, age) within and beyond sport
  • engage in collaborative and innovative research to advance opportunities for women, girls and gender diverse people to lead in all aspects of sport
  • educate for sustainable change in classrooms, organisations and the public sphere to transform sport cultures and gender relations

SAGE is affiliated with the Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research. The Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research (GCSCR) is dedicated to increasing our understanding of current challenges facing the modern world. Through the application of innovative humanities and social science research, incorporating the knowledge of academics from a broad range of interrelated disciplines, we are at the cutting edge of humanities and social science discourse. Our Centre's research is focused on the following contemporary themes: History, Media and Change; Mobilities, Communities and In/securities; Heritage and Wellbeing; Language, Culture and Belonging.

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Research Fellow, Grade 2 (0.6 FTE) to work with a team of scholars on a recently funded ARC Project, ‘Engaging Outsiders In Sport: Transforming Sport Event Legacy Planning’, which aims to investigate intersectional inequities in sport participation for girls, women and non-binary people in Queensland by working with them to envision legacies for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Using a co-creation approach this project expects to identify how and what benefits can be achieved through legacy planning that engages with end-users who have historically been marginalised in sport. In doing so, the expected outcomes of the project include the development of evidence-based resources to improve engagement in sport and to build capacity and sustain meaningful change for communities and organisations.

The Research Fellow will work with the team to recruit and interview participants from diverse backgrounds, organise and manage research data, support team communication, and contribute to the project research outputs and community engagement and impact activities.

Key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Conducting fieldwork and research that contributes to the research objectives of the project.
  • Work with integrity and ethics with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Maintain a good publication record in international, esteemed peer-reviewed journals.
  • Seek and apply for funding as appropriate.
  • Project manage key activities of the Discovery project.

This is a part-time (0.6FTE), fixed term (until January 2026) position based at the Griffith University Gold Coast campus.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will need to address the following key criteria to be considered for the role:

  • PhD from a recognised university in sociology, sport management, leisure studies, gender studies, disability studies, or Indigenous studies or related area. Applicants with a PhD under examination may also apply.
  • You will have strong qualitative research skills with a track record of quality publications in the areas of sport, leisure, organisations or similar fields. Or equivalent professional experience in sport or leisure management/policy.

In addition to the above, you will demonstrate:

  • Excellent organisational/ project management skills, including the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
  • A strong sense of social justice and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team.

Additional Information

Salary Range
The base salary for a Research Fellow, Grade 2 is in the range $100,137 - $118,916 (pro rata) per annum, plus 17% employer superannuation. The total package is in the range $117,160 - $139,132 (pro rata) per annum.
