Job Description

The Opportunity:

At Flywire, security isn’t a checkbox—it’s a foundational pillar of how we build. We are looking for a high-impact Senior Security Engineer I, Application Security to act as a technical visionary, bridging the gap between robust defense and rapid innovation. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Architectural Leadership: Define and drive rigorous security requirements for every system, service, and integration across the Flywire ecosystem.
  • Strategic Secure Design: Lead complex threat modeling and architectural decision-making, ensuring our product roadmap is resilient by design.
  • Proactive Collaboration: Partner deeply with engineering teams to identify, triaging, and resolve critical security vulnerabilities before they reach production.
  • Security Shift-Left: Actively embed yourself in engineering syncs to ensure "Security by Design" is a reality from the initial inception of every feature.
  • Technical Gatekeeping: Perform expert technical reviews and provide final sign-offs on complex infrastructure changes and integration proposals.
  • Full-Spectrum Assessments: Conduct comprehensive security deep-dives, ranging from meticulous source code audits to live application penetration testing.
  • SDLC Ownership: Serve as the primary technical Subject Matter Expert (SME), owning the security posture across every phase of the Software Development Life Cycle.
  • Mentorship & Culture: Champion a security-first culture by mentoring engineers and fostering advanced security expertise throughout the global organization.

Qualifications

Here's what we are looking for: 

  • 5+ years of demonstrable application security experience, including advanced source code auditing, penetration testing, product security assessments, vulnerability research, and reverse engineering.
  • Own and drive the secure design and architecture of upcoming products and services, ensuring security and privacy by design are foundational.
  • A "breaker" mentality, coupled with proven effectiveness at crafting and implementing scalable mitigating controls.
  • Expert working experience in authentication technologies, including OAuth, SAML, and SSO.
  • Deep and proven knowledge of applied cryptography.
  • Strong familiarity with the Ruby on Rails, Java, Python, Node language, and modern web development frameworks.
  • Expert-level understanding of OWASP security concepts and ability to assess and mitigate common and complex application security risks.
  • In-depth knowledge of security audit certifications like PCI-DSS, SOC I, and SOC II.
  • Extensive experience with web application security and leading the adoption of DevSecOps practices within a secure SDLC.
  • Provide hands-on, high-level remediation guidance and support to development teams.
  • Proven interpersonal skills: Exceptional ability to explain complex, high-risk technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences, including executive stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated project management and leadership experience in security initiatives.
  • Ability to build and maintain stable, influential relationships within your team and across adjacent engineering and product teams.
  • A seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of the area of specialization and the ability to define strategic direction.
