Job Description

The Protein Therapeutics group has the mission and responsibility for identifying and delivering novel large and small molecule therapeutics for a diverse array of indications.  We are seeking a talented and experienced bench scientist to join our efforts in protein expression and purification from mammalian expression systems.  The ideal candidate will have strong cell and molecular biology experience and demonstrated ability to work independently at the bench with a variety of cell lines using both transient and stable modalities.  The successful individual will conduct the day-to-day activities for routine production and purification of protein reagents and aid in the development of recombinant cell lines for functional evaluations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Expression of recombinant gene constructs in transient and stable formats for candidate molecule screening and production using HEK293 and CHO-based suspension cultures

• Perform flask to bioreactor scale protein production runs for protein purification and carry out expression characterization such as gel electrophoresis, Western Blot and biophysical analysis (Octet)

• Prepare precise technical report summaries, protocols, analysis and maintain appropriate documentation

• Maintain high scientific rigor and attention to detail in testing hypotheses and analyzing data

Qualifications

Minimum Background and Experience:

  • Educational background:  Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in scientific discipline with emphasis in cell biology, molecular biology or related field with 1-3 years of industrial experience or equivalent
  • Training and demonstrated proficiency in cell biology and aseptic cell culture with a wide variety of cell types, both suspension culture and adherent
  • Extensive experience with recombinant protein expression in mammalian suspension cell systems (HEK293/CHO/hybridomas) is required
  • Working knowledge of molecular biology, cloning and protein analysis techniques (SDS-PAGE, Western Blot)
  • Hands on experience with Wave reactors is desired, and experience with tangential flow filtration is a plus
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, exhibiting self-motivation, adaptability, and a positive attitude
  • Attention to detail and good oral and written communication skills required
  • Work environment:  The person filling this position will work predominantly in a laboratory setting.   There may be exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Additional Information

Position is full-time, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., with overtime as needed.  Candidates currently living within a commutable distance of Kalamazoo, MI are encouraged to apply.
