Created by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in 1986, Epicentre carries out field epidemiology, training and medical research in support of MSF's humanitarian objectives. We have 3 research centres in France, Niger and Uganda and epidemiologists on site. Our areas of expertise cover infectious diseases (malaria, TB, HIV, cholera, Ebola, etc.), neglected diseases (leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis, etc.) and chronic diseases that are on the rise in African countries, such as diabetes and cancer.  

The Uganda Research Centre conducts research on public health issues relevant to Africa, according to GCP (Good Clinical Practice) quality standards, in close collaboration with MSF, the Mbarara University of Science and Technology, and other health sector actors. Current projects, including clinical and vaccine trials, focus on tuberculosis, HIV, central nervous system infections and yellow fever. 

Job Description

Mission and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Data Management, IT, and Compliance Coordinator, the Data Manager (DM) will work closely with the other data managers and in collaboration with the study teams at Epicentre. The Data Manager will be responsible for developing and maintaining clinical data management tools for research studies, ensuring the proper implementation, and maintaining the quality of data collected in compliance with ICH Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines. This applies to studies conducted at Epicentre’s research centers in Uganda and Niger and decentralized projects for which Epicentre oversees data management.  

Main activities

  • Develop and validate databases and data collection interfaces
  • Develop data management plans for studies, SOPs, and other documentation related to data management 
  • Ensure that all DM tools deployed in the different sites are up to date 
  • Provide support to external partners and study sites on data management activities 
  • Coordinate DM activities with the study site teams 
  • Work with data controllers and clinical (or field) teams to follow up on daily data management tasks: data collection, visit planning, data entry, quality control, etc  
  • Build tools for automatic and manual generation, identification and resolution of inconsistencies   
  • Perform data review and report as required   
  • Conduct data validation activities   
  • Document clearly the technical details of the work to facilitate collaboration with other team members and ensure quality control   
  • Conduct regular field visits in the countries where the studies sites are implemented   
  • Reconcile study databases   
  • Participate in data analysis and preparation of clinical study reports, publications, final reports, and presentations   
  • Ensure archiving of study databases and related documents as needed  
  • Support statisticians in the processes of statistical data analysis  

Qualifications

Diploma / professional training:

  • Master's degree in computer science, Statistics or other similar fields with good programming skills

Professional experience:   

  • Minimum of 4  years of work experience in data Management.   
  • Experience as a clinical trial data manager is an asset

Skills:

  • Clinical data management skills in clinical research contexts 
  • Knowledge of research and methodology in clinical trials, good clinical practices, medical terminology, informatics, data protection, and reporting formats 
  • Experience and/or knowledge of clinical data management tools (e.g. REDCap, ODK, CommCare, OpenClinica, etc.) 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Flexibility and ability to work in a team and under pressure 
  • Fluency in English is mandatory. fluency in french is a plus
