Job Description

Support Permitting and Approvals for Projects Across Alberta and Western Canada

We are seeking an Intermediate/Senior Environmental Planner to support transportation, bridge and structural, municipal infrastructure, land development, energy, and other development projects throughout Alberta and Western Canada.

The candidate can be based in Calgary or Edmonton office.

This role is suited to an experienced environmental professional who understands how municipal, regional, and provincial environmental requirements influence project planning, design, permitting, and construction. The successful candidate will work closely with engineering and environmental teams to identify environmental constraints and approval requirements, coordinate multidisciplinary technical studies and inputs, and help guide projects from early planning through regulatory review and approval.

The position may initially provide significant support to our transportation, bridge, and structural teams, while providing opportunities to work across a broader range of infrastructure and development sectors.

What You'll Do

  • Identify and coordinate environmental assessment, permitting, and approval requirements for infrastructure, transportation, land development, and other development projects.
  • Develop environmental approval strategies and schedules, identifying regulatory requirements, technical information needs, seasonal dependencies, approval risks, and potential implications for project design and schedule.
  • Prepare and coordinate:
    • Environmental screening and constraints assessments.
    • Municipal biophysical, natural environment, and environmental impact assessments.
    • Permit and approval applications and regulatory submissions.
    • Responses to municipal and regulatory review comments.
    • Approval conditions, commitments, and permitting schedules.
  • Interpret and apply municipal, regional, and provincial environmental requirements, including those related to natural areas, watercourses, wetlands, riparian areas, public lands, wildlife and vegetation, and other environmental constraints relevant to development.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary inputs from aquatic and terrestrial ecologists, wetland specialists, hydrogeologists, surface-water specialists, contaminated-sites professionals, archaeologists, engineers, and other disciplines, as required.
  • Review technical information and preliminary design information to identify environmental constraints, information gaps, potential effects, mitigation requirements, specialist study needs, and permitting implications.
  • Work closely with structural, transportation, civil, and other engineering and design teams to integrate environmental requirements, constraints, mitigation measures, and approval conditions into project planning and design.
  • Support environmental assessment and permitting for bridge, culvert, watercourse crossing, roadway, municipal infrastructure, and other projects, including coordination of technical inputs and applicable municipal and provincial approvals.
  • Support the transition from approvals into detailed design and construction, including environmental commitments, permit conditions, Environmental Protection Plans, and related environmental requirements.
  • Independently deliver smaller and moderately complex assignments, including:
    • Developing scopes and work plans.
    • Estimating level of effort and project costs.
    • Coordinating multidisciplinary inputs and schedules.
    • Preparing assessment and approval documentation.
    • Tracking approvals, commitments, and deliverables.
  • Contribute environmental scopes, schedules, and cost estimates to proposals and larger multidisciplinary projects.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, municipalities, regulators, technical specialists, contractors, and project teams.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff supporting environmental assessment and permitting work.

Why Join Us

You will take on a key role within our growing Alberta environmental practice, working directly with engineering and environmental teams to help projects move from early planning through environmental assessment, permitting, design, approvals, and construction.

This position provides an opportunity for an experienced intermediate or emerging senior professional to take increasing responsibility for environmental planning, permitting strategy, multidisciplinary coordination, technical delivery, and client interaction across a diverse range of infrastructure and development projects in Alberta and Western Canada.

Qualifications

What You'll Bring

  • B.Sc., B.A., M.Sc., or other relevant degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geography, Natural Resources, Planning, Biology, Ecology, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Approximately 7+ years of relevant environmental consulting, municipal, regulatory, industry, or related experience, with consideration given to candidates with somewhat less experience who demonstrate strong capability and the ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated experience in several of the following:
    • Municipal or regional environmental planning and approvals.
    • Environmental or biophysical impact assessment.
    • Provincial environmental permitting and approvals.
    • Environmental constraints identification.
    • Regulatory application preparation.
    • Coordination of multidisciplinary technical studies.
    • Integration of environmental requirements into project planning and design.
  • Strong working knowledge of the municipal and regional environmental planning and approval landscape in Alberta, including the ability to identify the environmental information and studies needed to support infrastructure and development approvals.
  • Working knowledge of applicable Alberta environmental legislation, permitting processes, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to review conceptual and preliminary design information and work with engineering and technical specialists to identify environmental constraints, information requirements, and permitting implications as projects evolve.
  • Ability to synthesize multidisciplinary environmental information, identify information gaps, coordinate appropriate specialist studies, and translate technical findings into clear and practical assessment and approval documentation.
  • Ability to independently scope and deliver smaller assignments, including costing, scheduling, multidisciplinary coordination, and technical delivery.
  • Strong technical writing, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with engineering and design teams and communicate environmental requirements and constraints in a practical manner.
  • Ability and interest in training and mentoring junior staff.

Experience in one or more of the following would be beneficial but is not required:
