Software Engineering Manager

  • Full-time
  • Location: Quartermile
  • Compensation: GBP 90000 - GBP 110000 - yearly

Company Description

ENODA’s world-class team is building the first truly decentralized, intelligent energy system that will reshape how we generate, store, and distribute energy.

Foundational to our holistic and integrated platform approach, the ENODA PRIME® Exchanger, is first-of-a-kind dynamic power flow hardware designed to maintain “on-target” frequency and voltage, increasing grid efficiency and capacity for distributed energy sources like renewables and EVs.

ENODA ENSEMBLE™ is our ecosystem co-ordinator of ENODA and third-party assets, able to forecast, aggregate, and bid capacity in real time, functioning as a networked “operating system” for the electrical grid.

This is more than simply managing electricity flow. It is about creating the foundational system to prepare for a radically more capable, prosperous, and intelligent future.

Job Description

We have an opportunity for an experienced Software Engineering Manager to join our business as we continue to scale.

The Software Engineering Manager will be leading the engineering execution, platform capability, and organisational scalability of a multi-country energy software platform that coordinates distributed energy resources and advanced grid intelligence services (Grid Visibility & Insight, Capacity Intelligence & Planning, Flexibility Orchestration).

This role will provide engineering leadership across the software engineering team and the platform group, providing technical leadership, delivery coordination, and engineering governance across a highly complex software environment.

Working closely with Product Leadership, Technical Product Managers, Product Owners, Technical Leads, and the Head of Software Engineering, you will coordinate delivery across multiple workstreams and shared platform services. You will lead the platform group, own the platform service catalogue, facilitate cross-team alignment, and ensure engineering teams remain focused on delivering reliable, scalable, and maintainable software solutions.

In this role, you will provide leadership and governance across multidisciplinary engineering teams, coordinate technical dependencies, manage engineering health and delivery capability, and provide clear visibility of progress, risks, dependencies, and organisational readiness to senior stakeholders.

Position Objectives:

  • Translate product strategy into engineering execution by converting product requirements into clear system requirements, platform capabilities, and actionable delivery plans that align with business objectives and architectural principles.
  • Build and scale a high-performing engineering organisation, establishing the operating model required for sustained organisational growth.
  • Ensure predictable, reliable, and scalable software delivery while balancing short-term delivery commitments with long-term platform investment and engineering quality.

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop engineering leads and teams, fostering a high-performance engineering culture and technical excellence. Drive the effective and responsible adoption of AI-assisted software engineering tools and practices across the team to improve developer productivity, software quality, knowledge sharing, and delivery effectiveness, in accordance with organisational security and AI governance policies.
  • Coordinate delivery across multiple software workstreams, manage dependencies and risks, remove blockers, and ensure alignment between product, engineering, and platform teams. This includes coordinating with the DLT Engineering team, which develops the distributed ledger.
  • Establish delivery practices, communication rhythms, and engineering standards that work effectively across geographically distributed teams, ensuring that hub-specific teams remain aligned with platform-wide delivery objectives, architectural principles, and quality expectations.
  • Support architectural decision-making, establish engineering standards, and facilitate governance forums to ensure consistency and scalability. You will provide engineering oversight for the platform's shared semantic data layer, ensuring governance, consistent adoption, and proactive management of architectural debt.
  • Coordinate the engineering delivery of edge-compute and hardware-integrated software products, ensuring that software, firmware, and cloud components are developed, tested, and released through a coherent delivery pipeline. Work closely with hardware engineering and manufacturing teams to manage the distinct cadences, constraints, and dependencies inherent in combined hardware–software product development.
  • Partner with Product Leadership, Technical Product Managers, Product Owners, and the Head of Software Engineering to provide visibility on progress, risks, and organisational readiness while preparing the engineering function for future growth and team evolution.

Qualifications

  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and scale high-performing engineering teams through rapid growth, including developing technical leaders and coordinating geographically distributed teams across multiple hubs and time zones.
  • Experience adopting or leading the adoption of AI-assisted software engineering tools and practices, with an understanding of how AI can improve the software development lifecycle while maintaining appropriate standards for security, quality, governance, and human oversight.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, cloud-native platforms, and modern development practices, with the systems-thinking ability to see how products, platforms, data, infrastructure, and operations interact.
  • Ability to translate product requirements into system requirements, technical roadmaps, and engineering deliverables, evaluating trade-offs between scalability, quality, cost, and delivery speed.
  • Strong programme and delivery management skills in Agile environments, coordinating multiple teams and workstreams, managing dependencies and risks, and maintaining delivery momentum across competing priorities.
  • Exceptional communication and influencing skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into business outcomes, lead governance forums, and build trusted relationships across Product, Engineering, Architecture, and Executive stakeholders.
  • Experience establishing and improving engineering processes, governance frameworks, and delivery practices to support organisational scaling, team topology evolution, and operating model maturity.
  • Experience establishing communication rhythms, delivery ceremonies, and escalation paths across distributed teams, ensuring remote hubs are fully integrated into engineering governance and decision-making.
  • Experience delivering software products that integrate with hardware, firmware, or edge-compute environments (including over-the-air update mechanisms), including managing the distinct cadences and dependencies of combined hardware–software release cycles.

The following would be advantageous:

  • Understanding of shared data architectures, semantic modelling, and common information models as used in energy and utility platforms.
  • Experience within the energy, utilities, power systems, smart grid, or critical national infrastructure sectors, including familiarity with regulatory and compliance frameworks.
  • Understanding of electricity markets, flexibility services, distributed energy resources (DERs), and grid operations, including OT/IT integration environments.
  • Experience with AI/ML-enabled platforms, digital twin technologies, or large-scale real-time data and streaming architectures.
  • Experience building multi-product software platforms with operating models that balance shared services and autonomous product teams.
  • Familiarity with distributed ledger technologies, consensus protocols, and the challenges of integrating protocol engineering within a broader software platform.
