Job Description
Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
We are on the hunt for a suitably qualified and enthusiastic person to fill the role of Generation Technician (Mechanical or Electrical) at our hydro dams . The key focus of this role is to maintain and operate our Hydro plant in a way that ensures Contact Energy can be as successful as possible in the marketplace. Your goal is to support the reliable, safe and flexible operation of Contact’s essential assets.
You will do this by working with the best of the bunch to ensure safety at all times and that we carry out maintenance and operations at the highest of standards.
What you’ll do
- Conduct maintenance throughout the plant ensuring safety at the workplace and maintaining reliability maintenance standards
- Operate and isolate plant and apparatus in a safe and approved manner (as required under the Contact Energy Safety Rules), to meet safety and maintenance requirements
- Operate Plant and Apparatus when required by Dispatch Traders and/or in emergencies

- Qualified mechanical or electrical tradesperson or technician with 5+ years in the NZ generation industry or equivalent.
- Hold a trade or operating background with sound experience in the maintenance of equipment and systems.
- Specialist mechanical/controls & communications/electrical testing technical ability and experience.
- Ability to clearly communicate information to colleagues and other teams
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders
- Integrity and high personal standards
- Skilled at identifying and recommending cost effective solutions
- Exposure to systematic maintenance strategies and experience in condition monitoring
- Experience with equipment/plant operation and/or maintenance in a power generation or heavy industrial process environment
- In depth knowledge of some or all of the following: mechanical plant, heavy rotating equipment, electrical plant, control and protection systems, hydro turbine technology
- Certificates of competency to operate relevant plant

The flipside of this is you are also not afraid to work in isolation when required and ask for help when you need it. You’re a problem-solving pro who uses rigorous logic and methods to solve difficult problems and looks at things from all angles.
You will be known for your communication skills and are able to effectively explain complex issues to people who may not have a technical background. You’re a relaxed person who listens attentively, is easy to chat with over a cuppa and deals well with stressful situations. You can effectively manage diverse relationships and are always open to other’s ideas.
