Job Description

General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities

Under direct supervision of Supervisor of Mechanical & Maintenance, primarily responsible for the inspection and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers with duties including installing, rebuilding, recharging and re-tagging when performing annual inspections. Will maintain records, identify deficiencies, and ensure compliance with applicable safety codes and standards. At all other times, performs work in support of the Fire Safety program, including installing signs, locks, minor plumbing and electrical repairs and other tasks as assigned. Also performs related work, such as driving to and from work sites.

Examples of Typical Tasks

- Perform annual inspections and tagging of fire extinguishers.
- Identify damaged, discharged, obstructed, expired, or missing fire extinguishers and initiate corrective action.
- Recharge and perform hydrostatic tests on fire extinguishers.
- Maintain inspection tags, records, and documentation.
- Conduct surveys to determine proper extinguisher placement and accessibility.
- Installation, relocation and maintenance of fire extinguisher cabinets, signage, and mounting brackets.
- Provide maintenance and labor support of other units within the Office of Fire Safety. May work from ladders or confined spaces.
- Install signs identifying fire safety systems and components.
- Paint fire protection piping and handles on standpipe and sprinkler valves.
- Make minor repairs to building electrical & plumbing related to fire protection systems
- Make minor repairs to building masonry, woodwork, flooring and walls, and firestopping.
- Visual inspects public buildings, structures, and equipment to assess and check for defects, malfunctions, and hazardous conditions.
- Visual checks for and records the observable conditions of the premises.
- Operate a motor vehicle to travel to and from work sites.

NOTE: License Requirement
A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York is required. This license must be maintained for the duration of the assignment. Preference for those who hold and maintain a Class B’ CDL with tank endorsement

Qualifications

1. Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a mechanic, journeyperson or helper in the electrical trades, the mechanical trades, or the construction or maintenance of buildings; or

2. At least two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above plus sufficient full-time training or education in the electrical, mechanical or construction trades in a trade school, technical school or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of three years of acceptable experience. Six months of experience will be credited for each year of full-time acceptable training or education.
