Job Description
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire a Supervisor (Watershed Maintenance) I, within the Drinking Water Operations Directorate, for a position with the Water Operations South Division, Kensico Region located in Valhalla, New York.
Under general supervision, Supervisor Watershed Maintenance II the Supervisor Watershed Maintenance I, is responsible for managing and performing critical duties related to the operation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of infrastructure within New York City’s watershed areas. This includes reservoirs, aqueducts, groundwater sources, water and wastewater treatment facilities, roads, bridges, equipment, and associated lands. The Supervisor ensures strict adherence to all applicable federal, state, local, and agency environmental health and safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. Specific duties include:
- Oversees the operation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of infrastructure within the City of New York’s watershed areas, including reservoirs, aqueducts, groundwater systems, water and wastewater treatment facilities, roads, bridges, equipment, and associated lands.
- Ensure adherence to all applicable environmental health and safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures at the federal, state, local, and agency levels.
- Operates computerized, electronic, and mechanical equipment as needed, and drives a motor vehicle to travel between work locations.
- Organize personnel and teams to accomplish routine tasks, special projects, and emergencies.
- Estimates labor and material needs for regional projects.
- Directs the operation and maintenance of equipment and approves use of materials.
- Coordinates support from other DEP organizational units and outside DEP through municipal agreements and by contract/purchase order for work beyond the capability of the region.
- Completes employee evaluations of subordinates

- Manage time wisely to complete multiple tasks within allotted timeframe
- Communicate and respond to supervisor’s assignments regarding routine and non-routine work tasks in a timely and prompt manner as appropriate.
- General Familiarity of MS Office, MS Outlook
- Ability to navigate CityTime timekeeping program
- Ability to learn how to use a computerized maintenance management system and a computer tablet to receive and create work orders, input data and closeout completed work
- Experience in operation of a small surface water treatment facility.
- Might be required to use a respirator and maintain enrollment in the Bureau’s Respiratory Protection Program.
Licenses Required
- A Motor Vehicle Driver’s License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
- May be required to have or obtain a Grade C NYSDOH Water Plant Operator License and maintain.
Hours/Shift: 40 Hours per week, Shift work including nights, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Qualifications
A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, plus three years of recent satisfactory experience in the operation, maintenance, repair, construction or inspection of facilities, equipment and lands in a watershed area, including aqueducts, reservoirs, water and/or waste water treatment plants; at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
For Assignment Level II
In addition to meeting the "Qualification Requirements" above, to be assigned to Assignment Level II, candidates must have one additional year of full-time satisfactory experience in a supervisory capacity, as described above, for a total of four years of experience.
For Assignment Level III
In addition to meeting the "Qualification Requirements" above, to be assigned to Assignment Level III, candidates must have four additional years of full-time satisfactory experience, as described above, at least two of which must have been in a supervisory capacity, for a total of seven years of experience.
License Requirement
A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
