Job Description
NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK
This is skilled fire suppression and rescue work which involves combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and the saving of life and property. A firefighter is responsible for: rapidly and efficiently performing various duties under emergency conditions frequently involving considerable hazard; routine cleaning, servicing and maintenance of fire department equipment, apparatus, and property; participating in programs such as fire inspections, public education and public relations; participate in the delivery of training and sharing of knowledge with other fire / rescue personnel, including paid-call members; cleaning, maintenance and minor repairs for fire hall buildings and grounds. Although specific orders, instructions and assignments are received from a superior, a firefighter exercises independent judgment and action in emergency situations where superior’s directions are not available or possible.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performs fire suppression, rescue, hazmat, first aid and other related services.
As assigned, drivers operate all fire / rescue apparatus and equipment.
Participates in and maintains cleanliness, servicing and minor repairing of fire station, grounds, equipment, apparatus, turnout gear and uniforms as required.
Participates in training, drills, and practice sessions with career and paid-on-call personnel, as required.
Maintains up to date information and details with respect to location and accessibility of roads, industrial and commercial buildings, hydrants and all other physical and geographical aspects of the community in order to effectively participate in pre-planning, fire suppression methods and public safety.
Prepares and maintains records and reports, issues permits and enforces applicable codes and bylaws, issues municipal tickets, efficiently enters data into various computer software programs, and performs all required clerical tasks relating to the work as required.
Receives and records emergency calls and dispatches proper apparatus as required.
As required, performs fire and life safety fire inspections in all types of structures, pre-incident planning and participates in public education programs and public relations events as required.
Participates on department / municipal projects or committees as required.
May assist in fire cause and origin investigations and write associated reports.
Constructs, maintains, operates and trains others in the use of training props as required.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Applications will be screened to ensure the following qualifications have been met. If you do not meet ALL of these, please do not submit an application as it will be screened out:
Successful completion of an approved Firefighter Training program resulting in a minimum of Firefighter Level 2 Certificate (NFPA1001) OR a current member of Mission Fire Departments paid-on-call program OR completion of at least one (1) full year in a career fire department. Certificates must have Pro-Board or IFSAC seal.
High school Grade 12 graduation with transcript.
Transcripts demonstrating successful completion of at least one (1) year of post-secondary education (i.e. 30 credits-academic/technical/trades) OR at least two years of accumulated work experience after high school (equivalent to full time hours), preferably in work related to the needs of the Fire Service (i.e. building construction, mechanical, driving trucks and/or large or emergency vehicles, first aid, nursing, paramedic, instructor/educator, full-time competitive athlete, etc.).
Physically fit for the position of Firefighter and medically fit according to the standards set in NFPA 1582.
Valid BC Class 3 Driver’s License or higher (Class 1 for example) with air brake endorsement for vehicles with more than two axles (Automatic transmission is accepted). * Applications without this qualification will be accepted only if you are able to obtain the qualification by the date of an official job offer.
Current driver’s abstract - personal driving record (dated no more than 30 days prior to the application closing date). This abstract should demonstrate responsible and safe driving behavior. A current record with:
- A Driver’s License with no more than six (6) demerits/points in any one year, a total of no more than nine (9) points in the past five years, no suspensions under Section 215 of the Motor Vehicle Act, no convictions under Section 320.14 of the Criminal Code of Canada, and no present suspensions or charges pending.
- Ensure your abstract displays a status of NORMAL. If your abstract displays a status of HOLD, you may be required to provide details on the “hold” before advancing to further stages of recruitment.
Successful completion of a recognized EMLAB BC First Responder (FR) or higher.
Computer literate (i.e. proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or common software applications).
Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada.
No criminal convictions related to the job of Firefighter. Please see RCMP in British Columbia - Obtain a Criminal Records Check (Police Information Check) (rcmp-grc.gc.ca).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Progress towards or completion of a post-secondary education program (i.e. academic, technical or trades training).
Higher level first aid or first responder certification such as:
- EMR
- Primary Care Paramedic (PCP)
Additional fire service-related certificates listed below:
- Auto Extrication/Vehicle Rescue
- Hazardous Material Technical

Demonstration of community service, other than duties assigned as a paid-on-call/volunteer firefighter (i.e. responding to calls, training etc.).
ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
19 years of age or older
- No conviction of a criminal offence related to the job duties of a firefighter (criminal records check will be completed prior to first interview). *At the time applications are submitted, applicants will be required to consent to a criminal records check.
- Good physical condition and able to successfully complete the Mission Firefighter Physical Ability Test (medical clearance to participate in FPAT must be provided by medical professional).
Satisfactory medical examination to the standard of firefighter's pre-employment protocol that meets the NFPA 1582 standards.

All testing throughout the recruitment process takes place at Mission Fire Station #1 (33330-7th Ave, Mission B.C. V2V-4R1) and all applicants must attend in person. You must be successful at each stage in order to be considered further in the process.

INTERVIEW PROCESS INFORMATION
PHYSICAL TESTING
Endurance and Swim Assessments
The physical test is a series of exercises that are timed and scored as complete or incomplete.
The physical activities are:
- Swim Test-5 mins of treading Water, 150 Meter Swim (6 laps of pool continuously), 50 Meter Tow (Swim Test Assessment Document)
- 12 min Run-Candidate must complete 6 laps of the track in 12 mins flat
- C-PAT– All timed stations will be performed consecutively while wearing a 50lb weighted vest and be scored for time.

PANEL INTERVIEW & CANDIDATE SELECTION
Selected candidates will be notified to advance in the process to a panel interview.
This panel will consist of Fire Department recruiting and selection team members and representatives from Human Resources and IAFF Local 4768.
The interview will allow you the opportunity to expand on your resume, experience and educational background and allow you to answer behavioral questions.
Following the Panel Interview, successful candidates moving on in the process will be booked into a Ride-A-Long process for further assessments and to determine a good fit with the crew and the department.
RIDE-A-LONG
Selected candidates will receive communication of expectations and requirements before your ride-a-long date is scheduled. Liability forms must be signed by candidate before commencing ride-a-long.
During the ride-a-long, you will act as an observer and will not verbally or physically participate in emergency calls. You will have to attend one day shift (08:00-17:00). You can expect to undertake training with the crews which will involve a skills assessment, assist with all station duties and gain exposure to the workflow and environment of a career department. This part of the process may be evaluated by various members of the training division and hiring committee at any time.
Skills Assessments: Each assessment (various 1001 skills) will be demonstrated to candidate prior to commencing assessment-some of these assessments may be timed.
FIRE CHIEF'S INTERVIEW
Successful candidates will move on to the Fire Chief’s interview stage of the process.
Successful candidates will meet with the Fire Chief for an interview assessing motivation, character, and experience.
Following the Fire Chief’s interview and any further testing, some candidates may be given a conditional offer of employment or be placed in an eligibility pool. The conditional offer is conditional on at least (but not limited to) the elements below:
- Passing an assessment with a certified medical physician demonstrating medical fitness to perform the job of Firefighter. The assessment uses the National Fire Protection Association – Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments (referred to as “NFPA 1582”).
- Providing an updated Police Information Check with vulnerable sector clearance.
- Submitting an updated driver's abstract – personal driving record demonstrating safe and responsible driving behavior as at the time of application.
- Successful completion of work-related reference checks.
Candidates who are not selected for immediate employment may be placed on an eligibility pool (1 year) for consideration for future employment opportunities.
Candidates hired as new employees shall become members of IAFF, Local 4768
