Public Works currently has a vacancies for one (1) Temporary Exempt - Category 17 Asphalt Finisher position within the Bureau of Building and Street Repair.

Job Description

Under supervision, as an Asphalt Finisher, you will perform various journey-level asphalt finishing duties and are responsible for the safe set-up and organizing of worksites in connection with street maintenance and repair projects. You will complete tasks and duties by applying your knowledge of the distribution of various tack coat emulsions, patch paving, shoveling and rolling asphaltic mixtures.

Important and Essential Duties:
Your duties as an Asphalt Finisher may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Spreading, raking, and finishing asphaltic mixtures.
  • Finishing asphalt to obtain a compact and smooth surface.
  • Cleaning cut-outs and preparing sub-grades before paving.
  • Assisting in clean-up of job site after asphaltic repairs.
  • Setting up job sites (including cones, barricades, high-rises and signs) in a safe manner.
  • Completing standard job reports.
  • May operate Asphalt Kettles, Tool Heaters, and the Screed on Asphalt Pavers.
  • May serve as grounds person on an asphalt milling machine.
  • May act as a lead worker in the absence of a crew supervisor.

Nature of Work: The nature of the work may require the use of a respirator based on work performed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience:

Two (2) years of verifiable experience in street paving and repair work as an Asphalt Worker.

AND

License:
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
Valid Driver’s License: Applicants must possess a valid State of California driver’s license with no restrictions that would prohibit them from legally performing the essential functions and duties of the role.
