Job Description

**This recruitment is for multiple positions at all DPH facilities, including Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.**

Under direct supervision of a licensed nurse, the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) performs a variety of routine duties involving care of medically or mentally ill acute or sub-acute patients; performs direct patient care; observes and reports changes in the behavior and physical status of patients; provides a clean and safe environment; and performs related duties.

The essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  1. Under direct supervision, and as part of the treatment team, provides routine patient care in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards.
  2. Establishes and maintains a therapeutic and/or medical relationship with patients.
  3. As appropriate, reviews patient's admission documentation and notes pertinent facts regarding diagnoses and treatment history. Documents care according to department standards.
  4. Maintains constant and continuous communication with medical providers and staff.
  5. As directed by licensed staff; reviews and implements treatment plans, and provides one-to-one care when essential to treatment plans.
  6. Observes, records and reports patient medical, social and psychiatric behavior and physical conditions.
  7. Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings and treatment planning by reporting observations and concerns and by asking questions.
  8. Attends and participates in patient groups, case conferences, staff meetings and in-service training programs. 
  9. As assigned, completes procedures and specimen collection including phlebotomy.
  10. Adheres to health, safety, and infection control policy and resource utilization.
  11. Manages work time effectively, efficiently and productively. 

The Certified Nursing Assistant may perform other duties as assigned/required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

License and Certification:

  1. Possession of a current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health**
  2. Possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate is required for some positions.
  3. Possession of a Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1 (CPT-1) Certificate, issued by the State of California Department of Health Services, is required for those positions that perform phlebotomy

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate Requirement/Provision:

Possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association is required as a provision to employment for all positions. Candidates who do not possess such a certification may participate in this examination process and be appointed to a position(s), but will be required to obtain the certificate within two (2) weeks of hire date and maintain validity throughout length of employment. A photocopy of the valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate must be provided to the appropriate supervisor of the appointment within the allotted time frame. Failure to demonstrate/show proof of possession of valid certification within two (2) weeks of hire date and throughout length of employment may result in dismissal and/or termination of employment.

SELECTION PROCEDURES

Training and Experience Evaluation (Weight: 100%): Candidates can complete theTraining & Experience Evaluation now.  It will also be emailed to candidates meeting the Minimum Qualifications. This evaluation is designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job related areas which may include but not be limited to: Knowledge of treatment tools for medically and mentally ill acute and sub‐acute patients, of the principles of patient care duties, of basic medical terminology; Oral communication ability; Written communication ability; Ability to observe and identify changes in patient’s condition, to assist patients in and out of bed, into bath, and in and out of wheel chair, to interact effectively with patients, family members, and clinical staff.

Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Training and Experience Evaluation to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.

Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.

Certification 
Certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of the List.

Eligible List/Score Report
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. 

Candidate names will remain on the list for a maximum period of 12 months. Candidates that are not selected and expire off the list may re-apply.
