Job Description

Under supervision, transfer remains of deceased persons and surgical specimens to autopsy room and prepares bodies for post-mortem examinations; prepares and releases bodies to morticians, keeps morgue and autopsy room and equipment in clean and orderly condition; and under supervision assists with autopsy procedures; and performs related duties as required. Nature of work involves considerable physical effort and manual dexterity. Rabies exposure is possible.

  • Brings bodies of deceased persons from ward to morgue; wraps bodies in sheets and places in refrigerated compartments; checks storage box for proper temperature and anatomical position and proper identification of body.
  • Prepares bodies for post-mortem examination and pathological study by cleaning and washing, using necessary solutions; sets up instruments and containers for autopsy; places bodies on autopsy tables.
  • Prepares bodies for release to mortician after post-mortem examination by sewing up cavities, aspirating fluids and cleaning bodies.
  • Picks up tissue specimens from surgery and other clinics and performs specimen grossing, and specimen disposal or releases as requested.
  • Receives animal specimens and prepares them for examination, performs specimen dissection, and prepares tissue for testing at a reference laboratory.
  • Cleans autopsy room and sterilizes instruments and equipment delivers soiled linen to laundry, returns clean linen to morgue and storage room, and performs disposal of chemical and biological waste.

The 2520 Morgue Attendant performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Possession of an associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent courses with concentration in Biological Sciences and Anatomy from an accredited college or university; AND

Experience:
Six (6) months of experience conducting autopsies or surgical grossing in a hospital or medical examiner setting.

Note: One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

SELECTION PROCEDURES
Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (Weight: Qualifying): This Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications for this position. Applicants must also complete the official application. It is essential that applicants provide complete information in identifying their education, experience and training. The Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

Supplemental Questionnaire Examination: (Weight = 100%): Qualified candidates will be sent a Supplemental Questionnaire (SQ) exam that must be completed by the set date. Candidates will be evaluated on their relative knowledge, skill and ability levels in job-related areas. A passing score must be achieved on the SQ in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List. Candidate responses on the Supplemental Questionnaire cannot be changed once submitted. Candidates will be placed in rank order according to their final score on the SQ. 
Supplemental Questionnaire will be evaluated in relations to the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this class which may include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of the techniques involved in the handling and preparation of bodies of deceased persons for post- mortem examinations or burial; Knowledge of hospital methods and procedures; Knowledge of the care of surgical instruments and equipment;  Ability and skill to follow written and oral instructions, prepare simple records; Skill to deal tactfully and courteously with morticians and members of the family of deceased persons; Ability to handle remains of deceased persons

Eligible List: A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores, and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible lists, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available to public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g. as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of six (6) months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make final hiring decisions.
