Job Description
In preparation for the November 8, 2022 Consolidated General Election, the Department invites applications for a seasonal bilingual position to assist with translating, proofreading and audio proofing official election materials, and providing election information to the public over the phone. The person in this position reports to the Publications Manager. Applicants must be bilingual in Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin, or both) with a high command of English.
Position Overview and Schedule
The Department intends to fill this seasonal position by August 8, 2022. The end date for the position is approximately mid-November 2022.
The person in this position must work on-site at City Hall. Work hours will generally be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, work hours will vary widely in accordance with the demands of the election cycle and will range between 30 and 60 hours per week. The person in this position must be available to work overtime both during the week and on weekends as necessary. Overtime hours are paid at 1.5 the hourly rate.
This is a temporary exempt as-needed position. Temporary exempt as-needed employees who have worked more than 1040 hours in any consecutive 12 month period, and whose normal work week at the time of inclusion in the system is not less than 20 hours are eligible for health coverage and retirement benefits. Position Salary: $28.225 Hourly
Position Description
The ideal candidate should have a strong work ethic and a high level of integrity, interacting well with work teams as well as members of the public. The ideal candidate should know how to use common computer programs such as the Microsoft Suite and Adobe Acrobat, be able to learn new subject matter, and work on several projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
The person in this position will assist with the following tasks:
· Proofreading of English/Chinese ballots and Voter Information Pamphlets in paper and various accessible formats
· Translating and proofreading of English and Traditional Chinese materials for use by the public
· Maintaining records and documents
· Answering public inquiries in a phone bank setting
· Providing general clerical support and performing other related duties, as needed
This position also requires sitting and standing for prolonged periods, being able to multitask between phone and computer, and may need to occasionally lift and move materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
This position requires bilingual skills such as proficiency in reading, writing, typing, speaking, and listening in English and Chinese. Selected candidates must pass language proficiency and proofreading tests that will be administered as part of the interview process.
One (1) year (equivalent to 2000 hours) of clerical experience including preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact and processing of incoming and outgoing mail. Verifiable professional experience or university-level coursework in written translation from English to Traditional Chinese, as well as professional or university-level writing in English.
Substitution: Completion of a clerical training program (240 hours) or the equivalent of 15 units of coursework from an accredited college or university may substitute for up to 6 months of clerical experience.
