Classroom Facilitator

  • Full-time
  • Contract type: Full time - fixed term
  • Department: Justice
  • Service type: Custody

Company Description

At Code4000, our mission is to reduce reoffending by teaching software development skills to prisoners and to find them work in the technology sector upon release.

We are the first programme in the UK and Europe to teach computer programming to prisoners and we take our inspiration from The Last Mile, an established prison coding programme that started in San Quentin, but now also runs in several prisons throughout the USA.

We are a young organisation with big ambitions to grow and positively impact the lives of people in prison over the coming years. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a uniquely innovative project that looks to empower people in custody through teaching tech skills.

Job Description

Code4000 are seeking a motivated self-starter to join our small team, where your work will have a direct impact on the lives of the people you work with.

As a Classroom Facilitator, you will be responsible for the coordination of a cohort of students working through the Code4000 coding curriculum. This involves providing day-to-day support to each student, the assessment of work, providing meaningful feedback, and administering accredited material. While most students work independently and at their own pace through the curriculum, the role requires the occasional delivery of traditional classroom sessions, either to the whole cohort or a sub-section.

Our students are drawn from the full spectrum of the prison population and not all will have had positive experiences of formal training or education in the past. The role requires that each student is treated as an individual with recognition of their specific learning needs. Working within the aims and values of Code4000, you will work sympathetically, and with compassion, and act as role model to Code4000 student and the broader prison population.

You will contribute to the development of Code4000 as an organisation and a service, writing curriculum content and developing classroom practice to create a “what works” culture of teaching and learning.

The role is genuinely expansive and will present the successful candidate with an opportunity to bring their own ideas to a developing organisation, embedding their good practice in the day-to-day work of Code4000. You will also be able to develop your own coding skills while supporting enthusiastic students to learn to code.

Qualifications

Candidates must have at least a basic knowledge of computer coding and its uses, and ideally have some experience of supporting vulnerable groups or current and ex-offenders to improve employability skills, motivation, and resilience, though this is not essential.

Our academies are positive places to work and our students enthusiastic and keen to learn and we will provide a full package of training and support to help acclimatise the successful candidate to working in the custodial environment.

Code4000 are a pioneering organisation and are breaking new ground in the delivery of prison training and the requirements for the role reflect this.

The role might suit any of the following:

  • A hobbyist coder or developer, or a coding bootcamp graduate that wants to develop their skills by helping others?
  • A graduate from a computer science course and are looking for your first job
  • An experienced developer looking for an entirely new and rewarding challenge
  • Someone already working in education but looking for a refreshing new approach to skills delivery
  • Someone looking for a job where you’ll be able to explore your talent for helping others to enjoy coding, and where your input can have a life-changing impact on those you work with.

If any of these sound like you, perhaps you can help us break the cycle of crime by teaching prisoners computer programming.

If you can see yourself in this role, have a strong interest in technology, and a desire to support prisoners into lives free of crime but are not sure about how you might meet the requirements, please feel free to call Jim Taylor, Programmes Director, on 07711 229 962 who would be delighted to discuss the role further.
