Job Description

To support ESA’s Debris Mitigation Facility (DMF) and related space debris analysis tools you will have following responsibilities:

  • Debris Mitigation Facility (DMF) Integration and Commercialisation
    • Orchestrate, as product owner and developer, the contributions of ESA internal, commercial, and R&D contributions to the DMF in ESA’s gitlab infrastructure
    • Responsible for maintaining up to date CI/CD pipelines in ESA’s gitlab for DMF and underlying analysis modules
    • Support ESA internal, commercial, and R&D customers of the DMF in defining their use cases and facilitate the long-term maintenance of new functionality
    • Provide reporting on the usage of the software facility
  • Support mission customers for the compliance verification analysis task
  • Contribute to mission milestone reviews for compliance aspects w.r.t. mitigation guidelines
  • Perform, in support of missions, runs with the Debris Mitigation Facility (DMF), DRAMA, Scarab and Snappshot and document the results
  • Provide Training on OPS-SD software and processes to internal and external trainees also in training sessions not organised by ESA
  • Contributions to the further development of the Consolidated Astrodynamics Platform, Debris Mitigation Facility, and applications based on them
  • Contributions to the evolution and upgrade of ESA’s DISCOS database system and systems based thereon
  • Contribute the ESA’s re-entry forecasting process
  • Standby for project support in the areas of the Space Safety Programme, in particular activities in the Competitiveness Segment
  • Provide support to standardisation and handbook preparation activities in the area of space debris
  • Participate to the office’s regular monthly infrastructure coordination meetings
  • Participate to the office’s regular routine meetings
  • Present and promote ESA achievements recent research and work performed at the Space Debris Office at international conferences (once per year), and support related public relation or outreach activities
  • Support the organisation of conferences and workshops, and run space debris office demonstration towards VIP tours in the space debris facility
  • Provision of technical expertise to the ESA Technical Responsible in responding to TV, broadcast and newspaper interview requests on space debris

Qualifications

  • Bachelor / Masters in Aerospace or relevant
  • Expert knowledge of DRAMA, MASTER, and DMF from both user and developer perspectives.

  • Strong understanding of orbital mechanics, orbit determination, and coordinate systems & reference frames.

  • Experience with space debris modeling, mitigation, observation, and risk assessment.
  • Familiarity with space surveillance techniques, principles, and re-entry aerothermodynamics.
  • Solid background in system engineering and flight dynamics.
  • Knowledge of ESA’s Concurrent Design Facility (CDF), the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC), and the Space Safety Program.
  • Experience with spacecraft control teams and their operations.
  • Proficiency in software engineering, version control (GitLab), continuous integration & deployment (CI/CD), and configuration management.
  • Experience working with database systems, particularly SQL in PostgreSQL.
  • Basic understanding of hardware systems, including PCs, RAID, and backup mechanisms.
  • Ability to ensure seamless operation of software systems in routine processes and manage data retrieval.
  • High degree of independence and ability to manage projects autonomously.
  • Strong negotiation skills and experience coordinating with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to support outreach activities, including training, public relations, and presenting ESA research at conferences.
  • Willingness to participate in standardization efforts and handbook preparation related to space debris mitigation.
  • Fluency in English is mandatory; knowledge of another European language is an advantage.
