Job Description
At CPP Investments Assurance and Advisory (A&A) provides independent and objective assurance to Senior Management and the Audit Committee over the adequacy and effectiveness of CPP Investments’ system of governance, risk management, and internal controls. The Managing Director, Head of Assurance & Advisory reports functionally to the Chair of Audit Committee and administratively to the Senior Managing Director, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary.
Role-Specific Accountabilities:
- Developing a deep knowledge of CPP Investments business processes, through audits and advisory projects, that enable you and your team to support the continued maturity of our risk, governance and control frameworks as independent and objective partners.
- Developing and implementing the multi-year strategic direction of A&A and an operating model that ensures A&A continues to provide meaningful opinions and advice on the effectiveness of the internal control environment.
- Fostering an inclusive team environment based on trust, with a safe to speak up culture. Developing the A&A team, ensuring they have the optimal mix of technical and management capabilities to fulfill business objectives. This includes ensuring that individual and collective performance meets the current and future needs of the business.
- Embedding enterprise-wide priorities into A&A and playing a connector role across the organization based on your exposure to different areas.
- Developing and executing on a flexible, risk-based Audit Plan that focuses on areas of greatest risk and strategic concern to CPP Investments, with the capacity and experience to incorporate emerging risks.
- Maintaining best practice, risk-based methodologies and frameworks within the A&A team to the standards of CPP Investments, the requirements of the Audit Committee, and in conformance with the Global internal Audit Standards.
- Attending meetings of the Audit Committee to provide a summary of completed engagements and updates to support the Committee in its oversight accountabilities. Assessing and informing the Audit Committee of emerging risks, as well as trends, leading practices and professional or regulatory changes affecting A&A.
- Partnering across the first and second lines of defence, leveraging your expertise in governance, risk management and internal controls, as well as strong business acumen and advanced problem-solving.
- Observing on management governance committees and providing meaningful advice and feedback to the chairs on risk, governance and control matters.
Qualifications
- Exemplifies CPPIB Guiding Principles of integrity, partnership and high performance.
- Demonstrated experience leading and nurturing high performing, forward-looking teams, along with a track record of cultivating leaders. Experience leading internal audit, risk management or governance teams would be beneficial.
- Extensive experience influencing and partnering at the executive and Board-level.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate audit findings to a variety of audiences in a succinct and non-emotive manner.
- A proactive and transparent communication style, adopting a “no surprises” approach with stakeholders.
- A proven ability to understand, prioritize and monitor risks to an organization.
- In-depth knowledge of industry relevant risks, accounting and financial issues, statutory, regulatory and compliance requirements and related internal controls.
- A detailed oriented approach to managing complex audit and advisory matters.
- Exposure to asset management products, processes, information systems and data analysis.
- An understanding of the latest technologies/digital capabilities that internal audits can leverage, including AI.
- Designation as a Chartered Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, or other relevant Risk or Audit qualifications would be considered an asset.
