Job Description
CGG’s Geological Interpretation Team is one of the most experienced subsurface service providers in the industry with a unique blend of individuals with an ex-E&P operating background and inhouse trained specialists. Our teams discipline expertise covers: geology, geophysics, PSA and petrophysics and we call upon specialists from throughout CGG in data science (ML & AI), quantitative seismic interpretation, satellite mapping, biostratigraphy, sedimentology, mineralogy, geochemistry, reservoir engineering and economics, to support us with our integrated studies.
Working in the Geological Interpretation team and reporting to the Technical Head of the Geological Interpretation team, the Principal Geoscientist will lead the provision of structural geological input to our multidisciplinary projects.

The successful candidate will have the ability to provide a blend of direction and practical contribution to projects using a range of structural geological techniques and methodologies, inclusive of advanced structural geological mapping in the field and software aided numerical analyses (including fracture and kinematic modelling). You will be familiar with integrating your results with the other Petroleum Geoscience disciplines, and explaining structural concepts to colleagues and non-specialists.
This exciting opportunity will see you working both independently on specialised structural geological projects and multi-disciplinary studies, both in the office and the field, including client core stores. Projects will primarily utilise client provided seismic and well datasets, alongside in-house geological and data products, plus associated petroleum system data. You will be able to interpret data at all relevant scales from large regional structural trends, restorations of block scale data volumes (2D and 3D) through to fracture analysis of well and core data. You must have extensive recent demonstrable hands on experience working in a variety of different structural and tectonic regimes.
The role has an international remit from a single base in either our North Wales or Crawley offices in the UK, where a blend of office and UK home working is possible.
Principal Accountabilities
- Responsible for undertaking, managing and delivering technically excellent project work in line with corporate standards and industry best practice
- Technical authority on structural geology projects and proposals to include:
- Complex subsurface Mapping
- Fault linkage-Fault compartmentalization mapping, fault seal analysis
- Structural geology inputs for basin modelling
- Providing support to subsurface imaging
- Structural restorations
- Provision of technical scope & deliverables for proposal generation
- Provision of technical advice for multi-client product generation
- Collaborator to the in-house Peer Review Process
- Undertake coaching, training, developing and mentoring of peers and junior staff.
- Providing support to Business Development activities
- Developing geological workflows
- Advise on relevant software tools
- Taking a role in the integration of discipline expertise
- Lead technical development and innovation of new and existing products and services
- Proactively stay up to date on technological advances and industry trends which influence future projects, new research opportunities or technological ventures, to contribute to business value
- Active in publication and presentation of articles and supporting others to do so

Qualifications
In addition to demonstrating capability in the above tasks the individual will possess:
- A BSc in geological/geophysical sciences, but ideally with an additional MSc or PhD in a geoscience discipline with a structural focus
- Advanced technical knowledge, competence and scientific excellence in structural geology
- Significant experience in an E&P Operating company and/or Petroleum Geoscience consultancy
- A proven track record in structural geology, preferably with multi-regional and/or global geoscience experience, covering all tectonic settings.
- Experience of delivering clear and impactful technical presentations
- Integrated Project Management experience
The following will also be desirable:
- Knowledge of data science and its implementation to assist exploration workflows
- English language skills and other language skills an advantage
Development Opportunities
It is anticipated that a Principal Geoscientist may attend a combination of internal & external training courses and industry events. All our staff work with their line manager to agree development targets and a career progression plan.
Several routes exist for development as a Principal Geoscientist and these discussions will be undertaken with the line manager and Group Manager.
