Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Outrider maintains track safety and monitors and catches horses that are loose on track; leads horses to the starting gate and maintains order during sequence; works with team members to ensure safety; provides labor support to higher level and track staff; and performs related tasks within area of assignment.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

(These functions are intended as a general illustration of the work performed in this job classification and are not all inclusive for this position)

 

Assumes responsibility of maintaining safety on the track; ensures team members are completing their jobs and reports any issues to higher level management staff.

 

Catches any loose horses on track during morning working outs or in the afternoon before each race; oversees morning exercise routines and maintains order; leads horses during morning workouts.

 

Leads horses from the paddock to the track before each race and then lead the horses to the gate at post time; may sound an alarm notifying injury.

 

Attends and participates in professional group meetings; maintains awareness of new trends and innovations in the field of thoroughbred racing.

 

Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Experience saddling and handling race horses. Racing experience preferred

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: (Licenses, Certifications, Testing, etc.):

Ability to maintain all Regulatory licenses within assigned state of employment.

Must successfully pass background check

Must successfully pass an alcohol and drug screening

Must be willing to work a variety of shifts to include swing shifts and holidays if needed

 

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

 

Knowledge of:

Operations, services and activities of racing operations; principles and practices of horse racing workouts; knowledge of thoroughbred racing and catching lose horses; pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

 

Ability to:

Monitor, participate and supervise workout and catching activities; use and move various forms of equipment; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; prepare clear and concise reports; interpret and explain policies and procedures; interpret and apply federal, state and local policies, laws and regulations.
