Product Development Engineer (Building & Construction Products R&D)
- Full-time
Job Description
BlueScope is an Australian-born global success story spanning 15 countries. Our team of over 16,500 people is our strength and we want our people to be safe, successful and well. We’re leaders and innovators in transforming steel into smart products and solutions that support society, today and in the future. We’re proud of brands, like COLORBOND ® steel that inspire and protect everything from hospitals to bridges and stadiums.
The Opportunity
At BlueScope, we make products that are part of everyday Australian life. Through BlueScope Building Components, our teams work across trusted brands including LYSAGHT, Fielders, Ranbuild and Kiteleys, developing steel building solutions used across homes, communities and commercial projects.
We're looking for a Product Development Engineer to join our Research and Development team in Minchinbury, NSW. This is a hands-on opportunity to take ideas from concept through to prototype, testing, manufacturing and launch, helping shape the next generation of building products for the Australian market.
You’ll work on new and improved products across areas such as roofing, walling, cladding, accessories and broader building systems. One day might involve working through an early concept with the team, another might see you testing prototypes in the lab, reviewing product performance, visiting a manufacturing site, or helping translate technical work into installation guidance.
You’ll be part of a project team, with access to a broader technical network across Minchinbury and other BlueScope sites. The Minchinbury site includes R&D, NATA certified testing facility and prototyping capabilities, with continued investment in equipment and lab capability.
No two projects are the same. You'll work across concept development, prototyping, testing, compliance, manufacturing and customer feedback, bringing together technical expertise and practical problem solving to develop products that perform in real-world conditions.
What Will You Do
You’ll help move new product development projects from idea through to launch. That means working across technical, commercial and manufacturing functions, including:
- developing and improving physical building products and systems
- creating and testing prototypes with internal teams
- planning and supporting lab testing, product trials and manufacturing trials
- working with manufacturing teams on how new products can be produced at scale
- considering product performance, installation, certification and compliance requirements
- supporting technical evaluation, product documentation, training content and launch activity
- working with sales, marketing, manufacturing, engineering and external partners to bring new ideas into market
More About You
You might come from a mechanical engineering, materials engineering, civil or structural engineering, building science, manufacturing, R&D, or another technical product background. What matters most is that you’ve worked with building products or systems and enjoy the process of developing, testing, learning, improving and solving practical problems. You’ll bring:
- tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Science or a related technical discipline
- experience in product development, R&D, new product development or technical product improvement
- an interest in building products, construction materials, cladding, roofing, walling, façades or related systems
- confidence working with prototypes, testing, technical data and practical product evaluation
- the ability to work closely with manufacturing, commercial and technical stakeholders
- a clear, structured communication style, including technical report writing, preparing presentations or product documentation
- comfort working through ambiguity, where the answer is not always clear at the start
- exposure to the National Construction Code, Australian Standards, CodeMark, AutoCAD, Inventor, 3D modelling, FEA or manufacturing trials would be valuable, but not every item is essential
What You’ll Love
- a competitive remuneration package including 14% superannuation, 15% bonus incentive eligibility, and flexible work arrangements
- exposure to the full product development lifecycle, from concept development and prototyping through to testing, manufacturing and market launch
- the freedom to explore new ideas and help shape the next generation of building products
- access to industry-leading testing, laboratory and prototyping facilities, backed by ongoing investment in innovation capability
- influence every stage of product development, working closely with engineering, manufacturing, sales and product teams
- a supportive team environment where technical curiosity, practical problem solving and continuous improvement are valued
- the stability and career opportunities of a global organisation, combined with the variety, visibility and influence that comes from working within a specialised innovation team
