The Opportunity

Our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility is seeking a Mechanical Strategist to join the Coke and Ironmaking – Ore Preparation maintenance team. As part of BlueScope’s Australian Steel Products business, you’ll be supporting critical assets within one of the site’s largest and most complex process areas.

Ore Preparation plays a key role in supplying consistent, high‑quality materials to the Sinter Plant—a facility that processes fine iron ore, fluxes, and recycled materials into solid “sinter.” Sinter is a crucial feed material for the Blast Furnace, improving their efficiency, stability, and overall ironmaking performance. Reliable waste‑gas and environmental systems are essential to ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient sintering operations.

In this role, you will take ownership of maintenance strategy, reliability planning, and continuous improvement for Ore Preparation’s Waste Gas and supporting mechanical systems, including but not limited to: Baghouses, Centrifugal and axial flow fans, Blowers and pumps, Site services and utilities, Water and waste gas treatment systems.

You will be key in ensuring environmental performance, plant reliability, and safe operation of these essential systems.

What Will You Do?

As the Mechanical Strategist, you will drive continuous improvement, reliability, and long‑term asset integrity across Ore Preparation’s waste‑gas and mechanical systems. You will:

  • ensure safety standards are upheld and proactively address risks and improvement opportunities
  • investigate and resolve long‑term or systemic equipment issues, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions
  • develop detailed scopes of work, Inspection Test Procedures (ITPs), and commissioning plans
  • plan and execute minor improvement projects involving multiple trade disciplines
  • support strategic maintenance planning, asset reliability, and statutory compliance
  • drive initiatives to improve system performance, environmental outcomes, and lifecycle value

More About You

You are proactive, adaptable, and eager to grow your expertise, with a strong focus on reliability and safety. You’ll bring:

  • a Mechanical Fitting/Machining trade qualification with willingness to complete a Diploma, or a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering
  • experience with mechanical equipment in an industrial or heavy manufacturing environment
  • familiarity with fans, pumps, ESPs, baghouses, blowers, filtration, or similar process systems (desirable)
  • experience writing, developing, or managing contracts
  • sound understanding of mechanical, construction, and statutory safety requirements
  • a commitment to the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others
