Job Description
- Provide SME-level support of the hardware and software of Distributive Control Systems (DCS) systems (e.g., DeltaV), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) (e.g., Allen-Bradley) and centralized data archive systems (e.g., OSI Pi).
- Design and develop solutions to complex process control/automation application problems, system administration issues, or network connectivity concerns, and perform systems management and integration functions.
- Provide instrumentation engineering support including specification of new instruments, on-boarding, instrumentation configuration, and troubleshooting support.
- Provide high level support of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisitioning/Alarm Monitoring systems “SCADA' (i.e., LabWatch DAS), Predictive Maintenance Management Systems (e.g., KLATU), Alarm Notification systems (e.g., TopView & WIN911), instrumentation specific software applications, as well as software/hardware upgrades including design, development, project management, installation, and implementation.
- Support the facilitation of equipment onboarding.
- Develop department best practices, identify, and implement continuous improvement initiatives, disaster recovery contingencies, drive solutions for software/hardware problems, and support systems troubleshooting.
- Provide mentoring to Jr. Engineers and I&C Technicians.
- Serve as Business Process Owner (BPO) or SME responsible for the configuring, maintaining & troubleshooting the GMP or Non-GMP DCS and PLCs software and related hardware under the scope of the Automation/I&C department, including the physical hardware installation, related wiring, managing of upgrades, disaster recovery, and ensuring succession planning and training in place for these systems and their associated support systems such as HMI displays.
- SME providing BPO support for all configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting of sites GMP or Non-GMP data historian and associated visual dashboard systems including programming and support of related maintenance or troubleshooting including supporting upgrades, disaster recovery, provide backup support for system BPO, associated engineering documentation, and the training of users.
- Serve as automation/I&C representative and liaison between users and our group for on-boarding projects related to new automation, instrumentation, hardware and software upgrades utilized on pilot process, laboratory, or utilities systems including interim supervision of I&C technicians and support of FAT activities, and the implementation of instrumentation upgrades, continuous improvements, and troubleshooting support as required.
- Support the I&C/Calibration technicians as required, including complex troubleshooting needs, CMMS support, and support with instrument specific or reference standard software (e.g.: Kaye validator ICAL, Fluke logware, Thunder Scientific 2500 Control log, Micro-Motion ProLinc, Magnatrol PACTware, Emerson AMS suite, etc.).
- Represent the department for business needs requiring IT Department Support, which includes contacting internal/external IT resources, vendors for consultation for issues as well as evaluation of new technologies.
- Support validation, qualification, quality, regulatory, and/or EHS safety activities to ensure compliance with Biogen’s policies and procedures.
- Represent I&C department and participate in cross-functional and global teams to address issues, implement change and improve existing processes.
- Ability to work outside of normal business hours as needed including after hours, occasional weekends, and being On-Call.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Automation, Instrumentation & Controls, Electronics Engineering, or other closely related Industrial-focused Engineering or Computer Science discipline, and eight (8) years of progressive experience in industrial focused engineering.
Experience must include demonstrable experience with each of the following:
- Complex “SMART” instrumentation and DCS systems.
- At least two of the following: DCS, Historian, or SCADA application systems, and the ability to program and configure these systems.
- Working knowledge of coding or logic programming (including DCS control blocks).
- High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office with an emphasis on Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to effectively communicate technical information orally and in writing, including explaining methodology and consequences of decisions in lay terms to stakeholders and senior management.
- Experience in engineering construction, commissioning, or validation of capital projects with laboratory, process, or utility equipment and systems including support of design, FAT’s, and assuring engineering documentation are current (including URS, DS, protocol review, and change controls) following Good Engineering Practices (GEP).
- Experience with signal simulating and loop testing, as well as instrument loop measurement for AC/DC loops and for analog and digital signals.
- Proficient in engineering industry standards, guidelines, and regulations (including ISA, S88.01, S95, and CFRs).
