About This Role
This role will play a critical part in the development of a viral vector downstream platform process and its application to Biogen’s gene therapy pipeline of products. You will independently design and conduct experiments for multiple aspects of purification development activities, including column and membrane chromatography (e.g., affinity, ion exchange), filtration and membrane separations (e.g., TFF, depth filtration), scale-up, and technology transfer to the manufacturing organizations. This role reports into the Director, Gene Therapy Process Development and will be expected to work independently, manage projects, manage a team of scientists/engineers and participate in cross-functional, multidisciplinary project teams.
What You’ll Do
- Investigate and evaluate novel technologies to improve current purification processes used for the clinical and commercial manufacturing of adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors
- Independently design and execute experiments (DOE) to generate optimum and robust purification processes
- Interact with other departments such as cell culture development, analytical development, and manufacturing sciences
- Write and review high quality technical development and technology transfer reports
- Participate in scientific conferences and make contributions to scientific publications and patents

Qualifications
Required Skills
- Ph.D. in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, biochemistry, or a related field with 2-5 years of relevant experience, Master’s degree with 6-8 years of relevant experience or a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience
- A strong understanding of viral vector properties and experience with development of downstream processes for viral vectors
- Ability to generate, develop, and implement innovative ideas and deal with difficult scientific problems is essential
- A strong understanding of the fundamentals of chromatography and/or membrane separations
- Hands-on experience with AKTA chromatography and filtration systems
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are integral to this position
Preferred Skills
- A working knowledge of Good Manufacturing Procedures
- Previous managerial experience
